The vessel had left the coast of the on Thursday Libya and shortly afterwards he launched an SOS. Seabird, the reconnaissance plane that routinely monitors the area crossed by migratory flows, was unable to locate the boat: an absence that immediately fueled the fear of a shipwreck.
The reconstruction of Alarm Phone
He also provides a reconstruction of the facts Alarm Phonewho reports having been informed, in the early afternoon, of the departure from Zuwara of a boat with 117 people on board. The competent authorities and humanitarian organizations were alerted, despite the absence of a GPS position. Attempts to contact via satellite telephone continued throughout the day, without success.
Two days later, on the evening of December 21, the organization claims to have received news of the discovery of a single survivor on a wooden boat by Tunisian fishermen. The man reportedly said that he had left Zuwara two days earlier and that he was the only survivor of the shipwreck.
Weather conditions and ongoing checks
According to testimony, a few hours after departure the weather conditions deteriorated rapidly, with winds of up to 40 kilometers per hour. Alarm Phone specifies that it has attempted to verify the information received, without having yet been able to completely confirm it.
