After the victory in Wengen, Giovanni triumphs in the Kitzbuehel free climb, beating the champion Odermatt: “Winning here is madness”. Schieder fourth, Paris seventh and Casse eleventh
First Wengen, now Kitzbuehel and at the Milan-Cortina Olympics everyone will be afraid of Giovanni Franzoni, the new king of the Streif. On the iconic slope that certifies the greatness of a ski champion (only three other Italians have succeeded: Kristian Ghedina (descent 1998), Peter Fill (descent in 2016) e Dominik Paris (3 downhills and a super-G) Franzoni went down with bib number 2 and rejoiced at the finish line, sure that he had skied very well and had not made any mistakes. His time withstood all attacks, even that of the Austrian champion Marc Odermatt who stopped the clock 7 hundredths from the blue. The Austrian champion himself complimented the Italian: “I had a perfect race, but today the best was Giovanni”.

But it is all of Italy that shines on this extraordinary day: four Italians among the top eleven with Florian Schieder fourth at 67/100 who comes off the podium thanks to the feat of the Frenchman Muzaton who came down with bib number 29, Dominik Paris is seventh at 93/100, Eleventh cases at 1″40. Innerhofer is 20th at 1″90, Guglielmo Bosca closes at 2″45. Franzoni once again remembered his friend Matteo Franzoso who died in training last summer: “I’m shaking. It was a special race, right from the start I had Matteo in mind. Last year we were in the room together here. I wasn’t perfect at the top, but down below I skied like hell. “Already the first podium on the downhill in Wengen, now I win in Kitz: and at the beginning of the season I started with 60 – says an emotional Franzoni -. I don’t know what happened to me, I felt something special at the start. Everyone dreams of this descent and, having arrived here as a kid, I did it on the second try. I don’t know how I do it, I manage to transform myself before the race. I was super confident in my chances. I don’t realize it: winning in Kitz is madness“Happiness is also a check for 101 thousand euros that Franzoni will cash, the Kitzbuhel stage is in fact one of the richest of the World Cup, almost double the average of the other races.
