After Laura Pirovano’s two victories in the downhill, the three days in Val di Fassa ended with another Italian triumph. Goggia disappoints
The color of women’s skiing worldwide is increasingly blue. And in Val di Fassa for the third consecutive day there is an Italian who wins. After the splendid double by Laura Pirovano who won twice in a row in downhill and always by just one hundredth of a second, Sunday was Elena Curtoni’s day who triumphed in the Super-G. A perfect race, without flaws, interpreted perfectly in all parts of the track despite the Italian athlete not starting very fast. But then she brushed the curves lightly and arrived very quickly on the final wall. There she made the difference, no one managed to overtake her, practically a perfect race. “The last few years have been tough. It’s been a really long time since I sat in the leader’s corner – says Elena Curtoni -. Today I managed to do what I wanted. I believed it, I knew I still had it inside, but when the results don’t arrive there are doubts. I’m so happy, it’s really nice to still be there in front. The future? We will see”.
Zenere surprise
When the ranking seemed definitive, ours appeared out of nowhere, with bib number 33 Asja Zenere who finished third fastest, just 27 cents behind Curtoni. The Vicenza native had never stood on the podium of a world cup race and thus completed the fantastic three days for Italy. Disappointing however Sofia Goggia’s performanceleader in the specialty world cup. The girl from Bergamo finished in fifteenth place, 64 hundredths behind Curtoni: “I limited the damage. I had bad sensations from the second corner. I struggled to take down this super-G. My skis were out of control and I’m sorry” says Sofia Goggia, who will compete in the finals with 63 points ahead of Alice Robinson. “On the wall today at every turn I thought I wouldn’t be able to get to the next one. But only the Italians win on the Volata. I was very happy for Lolli (Pirovano), I’m also very happy for Elena who worked hard to get back here.”
