School and work, the collapse of the myth of the degree: the numbers that change everything

The facts, whether we are talking about business, research or literature, clearly indicate the non-relationship between success and qualification, but Italian school policy, dominated for decades by the left, has persisted in the opposite direction. With more than modest results, as the Corriere della Sera columnist Antonio Polito also admitted in a controversial article entitled Young people, graduates and the unemployed: the truth about work that no one tells.

He wrote thus: «At a certain point we believed inknowledge economyone in which only those who had a high level of education could hope to become flexible enough to adapt to the continuous changes induced by innovation in the labor market. The left-wing parties, traditionally focused on income equality, believed in it so much that they replaced it with equality of opportunities: the state’s task should be to offer everyone a high-level education, then the market would choose the good ones. As we know, that didn’t happen.”

Diploma mills, degree mills and unemployment

And, as is known, the monster of the gods took shape diploma and degree factories which over the years have produced an industrial quantity of unemployed, many of them semi-literate despite a piece of legal paper in your hand.

Today it seems that something is changing. According to the latest data provided by Ministry of Educationhigh schools remain the first choice of families with 55.88 percent of preferences (55.99 percent last year), the technical institutes they stand at 30.84 percent (31.32 percent in 2025/2026), the professional instituteswhich pass from 12.69 percent al 13.28 percent.

The consolidation of the new one fits into this scenario four-year supply chainwhich records a clear and transversal increase, with a particularly marked acceleration in Noon.

The growth of 4+2 routes

The most significant data concerns the route itself 4+2: 10,532 registered against 5,449 last year.

A number that leads to over 20 thousand the students overall involved in the four-year courses, with subsequent specialisation, activated in the last two years.

In short, there are some signs that young people are becoming more active realism towards a school that prepares them and places them in world of work instead of pursuing the family’s social ambitions.

Passion, talent and work

More than a century ago the philosopher Benedetto Croce he already warned the kids: «You have to find your passions, your work will take up most of your time, the only way to be satisfied will be to do the work you like, to love your job whatever it is. So you don’t have to live someone else’s life, get trapped in other people’s dogmas, just follow your heart and your intuition.”

More recently the new visionaries have repeated and applied the same concept: Steve Jobs And Elon Musk they have explained several times that they never hired based on pieces of paper issued by schools and universities but based on passion and the desire to make candidates.

After all Enzo Ferrari and Ernesto Colnagopioneers of the development of cars and bicycles like no other in the world, were not graduates: the first did not finish high school, the second primary school.

Want to see that recipe Valditara of training and not indoctrinating, much criticized by the left, is the one that will cure young people from the virusapathy and of frustration?
