Sempio, Marco Poggi and the Cappa twins were interrogated

The Garlasco crime is approaching a decisive turning point: the suspect Andrea Sempio, Chiara’s brother and her cousins are called to speak

Finally, the Garlasco crime seems to mark a real turning point in the investigations, producing twists one after another, one more surprising than the other. Here’s the latest news. In the next few days the magistrates of Pavia will hear, in sequence, the protagonists who have been at the center of the case over the years: Andrea Sempio, the only suspect; the victim’s brother Marco Poggi; cousins Paola and Stefania Cappa. The notices of appearance were delivered on Monday afternoon, as anticipated by the social profiles of Tg1.

The timetable is expected to be particularly tight. The Cappa twins will be heard on Tuesday 5 Mayat 10, in the carabinieri barracks in via Vincenzo Monti in Milan. Marco Poggi is expected on Wednesday 6thprobably in Mestre, where he had already been interviewed on two occasions as part of the new investigation. All three will appear as people informed of the facts.

The position of the suspect

The most awaited issue remains that of Andrea Sempio, called for Wednesday 6th. The 38-year-old, according to what his lawyers report, is still evaluating what to do: answer questions, file a statement or make spontaneous statements. “Should I answer or not?” he would repeat to the defenders. The lawyers’ response was dry: «Don’t worry about it. We decide.” The lawyer Liborio Cataliotti specifically made it known that “on May 5th we will dissolve the reservation”.

Andrea Sempio’s defense

Cataliotti returned to defend his client in clear tones, speaking openly about «an attempt at monsterization» in the imminence of the interrogation. At the center of the controversy are some posts written by Sempio on a forum frequented by boys with relationship difficulties, in which he apparently sought advice on how to approach girls following the “macho man” model. According to the lawyer, those messages have no connection with the murder of Chiara Poggi and have been taken out of context.

And here are two examples, brought by Cataliotti himself: the reference to «Forza Chiara» concerns a case of non-consensual diffusion of intimate images dating back to the early 2000s, and the girl cited was not Chiara Poggi. As for the post in which Sempio talks about one of his “passions”, the lawyer claims that reading the message in its entirety makes it unequivocally clear that it was about another person. «That post ends up proving to be a formidable proof of exhaustion»concluded Cataliotti, quoting a message written by Sempio on 15 August 2012: «So one hits disastrous for a barmaid in a pub. Dry pole, desperation, I get busy, I improve and a lot.”

«In the end there will be no one guilty»

On the sidelines of the book presentation «The footprint. The lesson of Garlasco and the Italians’ trust in justice” by Giancarla Rondinelli, at the Braidense library in Milan, the president of the Senate Ignazio La Russa offered a reading that was anything but optimistic. “In the end there won’t be a culprit,” he said, justifying his prediction with the complexity of a case that has dragged on for almost twenty years, with reconstructions first denied, then accepted, now called into question. Alberto Stasi, definitively convicted, went through five trials. “If we think that even Sempio can put in five,” added La Russa, “I won’t be there anymore when it’s all over.”
