Sinner, medical examination ok (with a view to the US Open). Here’s how Cahill could stay

Sinner passes the routine check-up at J Medical in Turin. The Cahill issue still needs to be resolved: here’s how the supercoach could decide to remain at Jannik’s side

Ready to play again. After the extraordinary victory at Wimbledon, Jannik Sinner stopped in Turin, where he underwent a routine visit to J Medical, the famous center dedicated to sports medicine.

The control aimed to check his condition after two particularly intense weeks at the Championships. To verify that he was regenerated to face the American hard courts in the best possible way: in particular the US Open, the last (coveted) Slam of the season.

Sinner and the difficult relationship with the heat

Sinner and heat are known to be sworn enemies of each other. And, after his illness in Paris, the South Tyrolean undoubtedly hoped that the climate in London would be milder, more typically English. Instead, Wimbledon showed off a heat well above averagewhich forced the world number one to constantly hydrate and carefully manage his energy to be at maximum strength during the match.

Apparently, Jannik adapted very well, growing one match after another until the two capital performances in the semi-final and final, against Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev respectively. The good physical condition was confirmed by the check-up at J Medical. But now, having established that you can continue to play with peace of mind, it’s time to rest physically and mentally. At least for a few days. Then, back on the court for the hard court season: first the Master 1000 in Toronto and Cincinnati (Sinner has won five this year and could aim to make a en plein with all nine); then, the US Open.

Why Cahill is so important to Sinner

It goes without saying: Sinner wouldn’t exist without the whole group behind the scenes, from the athletic trainers to the family. And it wouldn’t be the same without a supercoach like Darren Cahill, creator of all the main tennis successes of the blue. For this reason, it is difficult to think of a divorce between the two after a happy marriage that has lasted for four years.

The signs of a separation, in any case, have already existed for some time. In fact, at the beginning of 2025, Jannik announced that this would be Cahill’s last year at his side. A kind of Mr. Wolf, the latter, a man who solves the most unsolvable problems and who puts things back in order in the most complicated moments. A guarantee of balance and tranquility.

For this reason, Sinner always wanted to keep it, as well as his own coach Simone Vagnozzi. They had made a bet, Jannik and Darren. If he had won Wimbledon 2025, the decision would have been up to the player himself. Over the course of the tournament, the blue advances, round after round. And he reaches the final, where he gets rid of his rival Carlos Alcaraz in four sets. Bet won. The moment of decision arrives. Cahill confirmed, no touching. But now, in 2026, the same situation arises again.

How could Cahill stay

What could convince the Australian to stay another year? The victory at the US Open? Difficult, it has already happened in 2024. On the contrary, the ambition necessary to keep the supercoach at one’s side could be what is still missing, what cries out for revenge. The Roland Garros. Touched last year, when Sinner was defeated in the comeback by Alcaraz in the final; missed this year, where the world number one was stopped in the second round by an illness.

In May, before the victory at the Internazionali di Roma, Cahill had confessed that he would certainly stay until the end of the season, to then decide what to do. This time, no bets, as he confirmed after the recent triumph in London: «Last year I changed my mind, this time we’ll see».

On that occasion, he also expressed his deep bond with Sinner: «Jannik knows he has a good team, a united team, in which everyone knows what to do to help him get where he wants. And then he can relax, go on the pitch and play at his best. This makes a strong team. So my role is above all to keep everyone connected, a sort of coaching directorwhile Simone does the practical work on the field. It’s a different role for me, but one that I’m really enjoying. I’m having a lot of fun. And also remember that I am an outsider who joined an Italian team.” Words that make imagining a Sinnerian army without Cahill even more surreal.
