Calaserena Resort: the corner of Sardinia between emerald sea and thousand-year-old nuraghi

Located between Cagliari and Villasimius, the resort surrounded by greenery is the ideal base for a holiday between the sea and trips outside the city, such as on the Giara Plateau and Su Nuraxi di Barumini, a UNESCO heritage site

Sardinia remains one of the most loved destinations by Italians and, increasingly, by international travellers, who choose the famous island for the variety of its landscapes: jagged coasts and crystal clear waters, but also silent plateaus, archaeological sites that tell of a thousand-year-old civilization and villages where time seems to have stopped.

It is precisely this double soul, divided between the postcard sea and the authentic hinterland, that makes Sardinia unique unique in the Mediterranean tourist panorama, capable of conquering those seeking relaxation and those who want to discover history and nature.

The Calaserena Resort

The Calaserena Resort fits into this context, immersed in a scented forest of poplars, eucalyptus and tamarisk, a few steps from a golden sandy beach overlooking an emerald sea, in that stretch of south-eastern coast between Cagliari and Villasimius.

The 297 rooms, renovated in 2024, range from Classic and Superior types to Premium and new Suites with garden or balcony, including the Dog Rooms designed for those who don’t want to give up a holiday with their dog.

The buildings, distributed over two or three floors, never exceed 400 meters from the sea, while the large private beach is equipped with oversized umbrellas and two sunbeds in the first rows.

On the catering front, the resort focuses on variety and quality; ranging from classic buffets to the Sea Box service for dining comfortably under the umbrella, without forgetting the gourmet proposals of the Il Gusto, Le Onde and La Brezza restaurants, the latter included for suite guests and for a fee for all others.

Two new stay formulas introduced this year: the Soft-Inclusive, already richer than the traditional full board, designed for those looking for a simple stay without surprises, and the All-Inclusive, its natural evolution, which adds late breakfast, snacks throughout the day, unlimited drinks at the bar, a second weekly access to “La Trattoria” and other services designed for maximum guest freedom.

The sports offer is also wide, with the new fitness area and SPA, five-a-side football pitches, padel, beach volleyball, tennis and archery, accompanied by a rich entertainment programme.

The excursions

But a holiday at Calaserena can easily turn into an opportunity to explore some of the most evocative places in internal Sardinia.

About an hour’s drive away is the Giara Plateau, a twelve kilometer long basaltic plateau that rises to over 500 meters above sea level between the Marmilla, the Trexenta and the Sarcidano, formed almost three million years ago from the lava that flowed from two ancient fractures.

It is an environment almost suspended in time, where natural depressions call in winter and spring paulis they fill with rainwater, creating small and large temporary ponds surrounded by white buttercups.

It is precisely here that the famous Cavallino della Giara lives free, a small-sized horse breed unique in the world, which settled on the plateau probably in the Nuragic or Punic era and has survived almost isolated until today, adapting to an area where food is scarce in summer and abundant in the colder months.

The area, recognized as a Site of Community Interest since 1995, also preserves traces of human settlements dating back to the Neolithic.

Not far from the Giara stands Su Nuraxi di Barumini, the most famous Nuragic complex on the island, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. Built in basalt starting from the Middle Bronze Age, between 1500 and 1350 BC, the site preserves the central tower, the bastions with the corner towers and an entire village of circular huts which bear witness to over a thousand years of history of the Nuragic civilisation, from its origins to the Carthaginian occupation.

Those who prefer to stay on the coast, however, can reach Villasimius in less than half an hour, with its beaches of fine white sand and turquoise sea which over the years have earned it international fame, as well as a lively historic center and a range of clubs and restaurants ideal for evenings out of the resort.

Between sea, archeology and wild nature, the territory surrounding the Calaserena Resort summarizes the most authentic essence of Sardinia in just a few dozen kilometres.
