WhatsApp wants to become a service capable of accompanying users on any device, without forcing them to continually return to their smartphone. This is the direction indicated by the latest update package announced by the Meta platform, which concerns iPad, cars, computers and music services.
The most significant innovation is the possibility of registering directly from the iPad application, without having to first connect the tablet to a WhatsApp account already active on the phone. Added to this are a completely renewed experience on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, greater integration with Adobe Acrobat for PDF management and new tools for sharing what you are listening to on Spotify or Apple Music in the State.
The features are being rolled out gradually. This means that they may not appear on all devices at the same time, even after updating WhatsApp to the latest version available.
WhatsApp can be recorded directly from the iPad
The official WhatsApp application for iPad was launched on May 27, 2025, after years of requests from users. The version for the Apple tablet introduced audio and video calls for up to 32 participants, screen sharing and compatibility with iPadOS features such as Stage Manager, Split View and Slide Over. It also supported Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil.
Until now, however, the iPad was treated primarily as a companion device. To access the conversations you had to open WhatsApp on your phone, scan the QR code shown on the tablet and connect the two devices via the multi-device system. The same procedure continues to be indicated on the support pages visible during the transition phase.
The new update eliminates this step for creating a new account. The user can download WhatsApp from the App Store, directly start the registration process on the iPad, verify their number and configure the profile from the tablet.
This does not mean that WhatsApp has eliminated the phone number as an account identifier. The difference is that it will no longer be necessary to have WhatsApp already installed and active on a smartphone to complete the first application setup on the iPad.
This is a particularly important change for those who use tablets as their main device, for those who work predominantly from iPad and for people who want to keep accounts and devices separate. However, during the gradual release, some users may continue to only find the previous QR code screen.
WhatsApp also changes on CarPlay and Android Auto
The other major area of intervention concerns the automobile. WhatsApp had already worked with CarPlay and Android Auto for some time, but the experience was limited and largely dependent on the smartphone’s voice commands.
On CarPlay, for example, it was possible to ask Siri to send a message or make a call, but a true full WhatsApp interface was missing. Apple itself presents CarPlay as a system that allows you to make phone calls, listen to and dictate messages without taking your attention away from the road.
A first change had already arrived in April 2026, when WhatsApp introduced a native interface on CarPlay with access to favorite contacts, call history and some profile information. Previously, most operations went exclusively through Siri.
The new update extends and standardizes this experience also on Android Auto. From the car’s display it will be possible to listen to new messages and reply via dictation, start WhatsApp calls, consult the history and quickly reach contacts added to your favourites.
The interaction remains designed above all for vocal use. It is therefore not a complete reproduction of the smartphone app on the dashboard: while driving it will not be possible to freely scroll through entire conversations or read long messages on the screen. The priority remains to reduce touches and distractions, using audio and voice commands for main operations.
Getting the latest stuff shouldn’t require you to install a separate app in your car. Simply update WhatsApp on your phone and connect it to a CarPlay or Android Auto compatible vehicle. However, availability may vary depending on the smartphone, the operating system version and the infotainment system fitted to the car.
PDFs open from WhatsApp thanks to Adobe Acrobat
WhatsApp is also improving document management, through an integration developed with Adobe Acrobat.
Until now, especially on computers, opening a PDF received in chat could require downloading the file and then switching to an external application. With the new experience you can view the document in full screen starting directly from the conversation and access Acrobat tools to insert annotations, fill out forms, highlight parts of the text or make more advanced changes.
However, it is important to distinguish between preview and processing. The PDF can be opened and viewed within the WhatsApp experience, while to edit texts, images, pages or layout you are accompanied in the Adobe Acrobat environment. From here the document can be saved and sent back to the chat without having to manually start the sharing process again.
The feature is supported on WhatsApp Web through Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge and on the WhatsApp Desktop app for Windows. It is not currently available on the macOS desktop app, on the mobile versions of WhatsApp, or through the WhatsApp Business API.
The visualization and some basic tools are free. Advanced edits, such as making direct changes to text, rearranging elements, or organizing pages, may require access to an Adobe account and a paid Acrobat subscription. This integration is also being rolled out progressively and may initially only be visible to some users.
Spotify and Apple Music songs arrive in the states
The latest update concerns music sharing. Users can publish a song listened to on Spotify or Apple Music directly to WhatsApp Status, avoiding manually copying and pasting the link.
With Spotify, the function had already started to be distributed in November 2025. From the sharing menu of the music service you can choose “WhatsApp Status” and create a card containing cover, title and link to open the content in the app. In the case of songs, a short audio preview is also played.
Sharing is not limited to individual songs: Spotify also allows you to publish albums, playlists, podcasts, audiobooks and artist content. Like other Status updates, cards remain visible for 24 hours and can be shown to all authorized contacts or just a selection of your choice.
Integration with Apple Music follows the same logic: just a few taps from the sharing menu are enough to transform the song you’re listening to into a status update, from which friends can reach the content on the music service.
The novelty strengthens the more social dimension of WhatsApp. States are no longer just a space for photographs, videos, texts and voice messages, but also become a showcase for interests, musical tastes and content from other platforms.
When new features arrive
WhatsApp has announced that the new features are already being implemented. However, the release takes place on the server side and does not depend exclusively on the installation of the latest update.
To increase the chances of receiving them, it is advisable to update WhatsApp through the App Store, Google Play Store or the official website for the desktop versions. In the case of PDFs, you must also use one of the browsers and systems supported by Adobe.
Not all the functions announced are completely new: some, such as Spotify sharing in the States and the new CarPlay interface, had already appeared in recent months. The new package expands its distribution, adds further platforms and, above all, consolidates the transformation of WhatsApp from an application linked to the telephone to a service available increasingly independently on tablets, computers and cars.
