We tested the Sea-Doo models on Lake Syväri, in the Savo region of Finland, to understand how jet skis are changing: more technological, more versatile and increasingly outdoor-oriented.
For many Italians the watercraft continues to be associated with a very specific image: noise, speed and some inevitable controversy with those who, during the summer, seek tranquility on the beach. Yet it is enough to move a few thousand kilometers north, into the heart of Finlandto realize how limited this perception is.
On the Syväri lakein the Savo regionone of the most spectacular areas of the famous Thousand Lakes Regionwe tried the new range Sea-Doo in a context completely different from the Mediterranean one. Here the jet ski is not a simple recreational vehicle, but becomes a real tool of exploration. Immense lakes connected to each other, hundreds of islands, pristine forests and small villages reachable directly from the water transform every outing into a journey, more than a simple excursion.
It is precisely in scenarios like this that we understand how the sector is experiencing a profound evolution. Jet skis are following a very similar path to that faced years ago by SUVs: born for a specific purpose, today they have transformed into extremely versatile vehicles, capable of adapting to completely different needs.
A new philosophy
Leading this transformation is Sea-Doothe group’s brand BRP (Bombardier Recreational Products)a Canadian company that has built its identity by designing vehicles dedicated to the outdoors in every environment: from water to snow, through the most challenging terrains with ATVs and side-by-sides.
This experience is also clearly reflected in the Sea-Doo range, probably one of the most complete available on the market today.
In fact, alongside the more sporty models there is space for jet skis designed specifically for touringadventure and even fishing.
The GTX Limited they represent the maximum in terms of comfort on long journeys, while Explorer Pro created for those who want to tackle real expeditions on water thanks to high autonomy, large loading spaces, extended rear platform and numerous solutions dedicated to travel. Even more particular is the FishPro Sportsdeveloped specifically for fishing, with rod holders, dedicated accessories and a configuration that allows you to reach places that are difficult to access with a traditional boat.
For those who continue to seek adrenaline and pure performance, the range includes models such as GTR, RXP-X And RXT-Xdesigned to offer searing acceleration, driving precision and extremely sporty behavior.
Technology that makes exploring easier
Market growth and an increasingly demanding audience have pushed Sea-Doo to invest heavily in innovation. One of the most striking elements is the new 10.25 inch panoramic touchscreen displayincreasingly similar to that of a premium car. It doesn’t just show speed, range or engine data, but integrates a digital ecosystem designed to accompany those tackling long itineraries.
Through the Bluetooth connection you can connect your smartphone and use the app BRP GO!which brings nautical navigation with cartography to the display Navionicsroute planning, sharing your location with the navigation group, as well as managing music and numerous other functions. In this way the jet ski becomes a real means of travel and not just for fun.
The system is also very interesting iDF (Intelligent Debris-Free)a solution that is as simple as it is effective. By pressing a button on the handlebars, the flow of the hydrojet is reversed, allowing you to quickly expel algae, branches or other debris that could block the turbine, without having to get into the water. A function which, during long journeys between lakes and waterways, can really make the difference.
A means of transport
The experience on Lake Syväri completely changes the way you look at these boats. In Italy we are used to considering them almost exclusively as tools for summer free time, but in many areas of Northern Europe, Canada or the United States they represent an extremely practical means of moving between homes, cottages, marinas and natural areas.
Sailing among the infinite lakes of Finland is immediately understood as one Sea-Doo Explorer Pro can replace, in many situations, a small traditional boat, with the advantage of low consumption, greater agility and extraordinary ease of use. Water, instead of representing an obstacle, becomes a road.

Fun yes, but with responsibility
Another interesting aspect concerns the cultural approach promoted by Sea-Doo. Aware that jet skis can generate conflicts with other users of the sea and lakes, the brand has been carrying out the campaign for years “Responsible Rider”which encourages management that respects the environment, wildlife and people.
The objective is to promote responsible navigation, maintaining safe distances, limiting speed in sensitive areas and respecting other water users. An important message, which demonstrates how the growth of this sector also passes through a different navigation culture.
Explore freely
The Finnish experience shows that Sea-Doo they tell of a much deeper evolution than that which concerns technology alone. They are changing the very way of conceiving the jet ski.
No longer just a means of running near the coast during summer holidays, but a tool capable of accompanying exploration, slow tourism, adventure and even specialized activities such as sport fishing.
The breadth of the range, the construction quality, the integration of advanced digital technologies and the attention to safety demonstrate how this market has entered a new phase of maturity. And after crossing the crystal clear waters of Syväri lakeimmersed in the silence of the Finnish forests, it becomes difficult to continue to see these vehicles only as a jet ski. In many contexts around the world it is already something much more important: an authentic means of exploration and freedom.
