According to the World Economic Forum’s “Future of Jobs Report”, 170 million new jobs will be created compared to 92 million destined to disappear
That artificial intelligence is destined to contract demand in various sectors is a certainty that the markets are already dealing with. But stopping at the narrative of the machine that “cannibalizes” professions risks blinding us to the real challenge. The point will never be to chase the algorithm on its terrain – that of immediate performance – but to develop a new critical literacy. In a world where processing becomes an automated commodity, the primary value once again becomes human supervision, data verification and the ability to sign off on the final decision. In fact, the digital revolution is not erasing work, but is changing its rules and skills. AI does not question the value of people: rather, it undermines a way of working based on approximation, rewarding method, preparation and ability to adapt.
What can be delegated to artificial intelligence
«It is a dynamic that we have observed in systematic trading for over twenty years», he explains Andrea Ungerengineer and four-time world trading champion. «Software and algorithms analyze markets and automatically execute trades long before the current diffusion of generative AI. Yet, automation has not eliminated the need for expertise: it has made it even more evident.”
UngerBefore dedicating himself professionally to the markets, he gained experience within a multinational company, also knowing directly the dynamics of corporate work. His path has allowed him to closely observe which activities can be delegated to technology and which, however, continue to require competence, judgment and human responsibility.
«There is the illusion that technology can solve complexity with one click. But before entrusting a task to a machine, it is necessary to decide what it must do, what data it must work on and with what criteria to evaluate the results. An algorithm can apply a rule thousands of times without getting tired. If the rule is wrong, however, it will accelerate the error with the same efficiency”, he continues Unger.
Where can man have the greatest impact in the world of work
This is where the value of human work shifts. AI can reduce time, organize information, produce content and support analysis. However, it cannot alone guarantee that the data is reliable, that an answer is consistent with the objective or that a decision is correct. Without critical thinking and mastery of the process, speed becomes a multiplier of errors. With competent guidance, however, it becomes an advantage.
The data confirms that the transformation does not simply coincide with the disappearance of work. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 estimates that 170 million new jobs will be created and 92 million replaced by 2030, with a net positive balance of 78 million. In the same period, 39% of the fundamental skills required of workers will change. It doesn’t mean that every profession will be safe, but that the real ground of competition will be the ability to adapt.
How to manage artificial intelligence in a virtuous way
«AI should not be tolerated or idealized: it must be governed. We cannot know how every single profession will change, but we can prepare ourselves without delegating our judgment to the machine. Technology speeds up work. Management and responsibility remain human,” he says Ungerbefore concluding: «The value of a professional is not only in the quantity of work he is able to produce, but also in the ability to understand a problem, formulate the right questions and critically evaluate the answers. AI can be an extremely powerful aid, but it needs direction. If the necessary competence to check their work is lacking, the risk is to accept an answer as correct only because it was produced quickly and presented convincingly.”
