Artificial intelligence, the EU risks being colonized. The 3 billion plan of the French Mistral

Mistral AI raises 3 billion in financing. The French company wants to keep up with the American and Chinese giants, but Europe remains behind.

If the race for AI is now clearly looming as a two-way challenge between the United States and China, Europe can also count on its continental champions.

There is certainly one to occupy this position Mistral AIthe French artificial intelligence startup, which today announced a new maxi-fundraising of 3 billion euros.

In Europe too, AI is attracting funds

The round announced today by Mistral AI is a Series D from 3 billion of euros at a post-money valuation higher than 21 billion.

The company presents it as the largest equity round ever closed by a European AI or technology companyalmost double the 1.7 billion reached with the Series C in September 2025, when ASML led the 1.7 billion round by investing 1.3 billion and becoming the reference shareholder.

Leading the new round was Samsung Electronicssupported as co-lead by the fund Scaleup Europe Fundmanaged by EQT and PSG Equity. New entrants include Advent, BlackRock funds and Luxembourg, while a16z, ASML, Nvidia and Salesforce Ventures confirm.

A fundraising which also adds to the 830 million dollars in debt obtained in March 2026 for the expansion of the data centers.

The objectives of the French startup

Founded in Paris in 2023 by Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample And Timothée Lacroixformer Google DeepMind and Meta researchers, Mistral develops open-weight AI language models, the latest of which is Mistral Medium 3.5as well as the assistant Vibe (formerly Le Chat), the coding agent Codestral and the developer platform La Plateforme.

It is undoubtedly the most important AI startup on the European continentwhich already has over 125 corporate customers, from Airbus to ASML to HSBC.

The new capital will finance the company’s “full stack” strategy, i.e model research, sovereign computing infrastructures (including the 40 MW Essonne data center with 18,000 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell chips and the 1.2 billion euros announced in Sweden) and above all a European alternative offering to American and Chinese platforms.

The stated goal of the AI company is the technological independence of the continent. Mensch himself had warned the French National Assembly that Europe has “two years” to build its own infrastructure or resign itself to becoming a “vassal state” of US technology.

Europe remains behind the United States and China

Despite the record round, however, the the gap with the two superpowers remains enormous. According to the Stanford AI Index 2026, the United States invests 23 times more than China in AI and, in generative AI alone, exceeds the sum of China and Europe, with a gap of 25.4 billion dollars already in 2024.

In the last decade, American private capital in the sector has exceeded 400 billion dollars compared to around 50 billion for the entire EU. The old continent also controls less than 5% of global computing capacity dedicated to AI.

Yet, Mistral has opened its platform to third-party models, starting with the GLM-5.2 of Z.ai (Zhipu AI), one of the Chinese tigers. This leads to the paradox whereby the so-called European technological sovereignty also passes through Beijing’s open-source models.

Finally, the sector remains the most regulated in the world as a result of the AI Act, and if Brussels has promised 200 billion with the InvestAI plan and 11.4 billion for seven gigafactoryHowever, European private capital remains far inferior to that of the United States and China. The Old Continent has been left behind.
