Naples’ embrace of Italvolley, what a show in Piazza del Plebiscito

The European Championship started with the challenge against Sweden, six thousand of us in the splendid setting just a few steps from the sea

Ever closer to the people, volleyball is already a very popular sport and in Italy both women and men achieve great results at every important event. After the silver medal of the Italian team from Velasco at the European Championships now it’s up to Fefè De Giorgi’s team to go after the European title in this traveling edition that sees Italy’s debut in Piazza del Plebiscito in Naples in front of six thousand spectators including the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella. An event that was already being felt in the city yesterday as thousands of people attended the training in that space that Neapolitans cross before going down towards the sea. There the Azzurri people celebrated Maradoina’s championships and then those of Spalletti and Conte, and tonight Napoli will meet there to make the reigning world champion team feel their warmth.

New facility

After mid-August, work began to build this new system in front of the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola, an important investment that risked being lost due to bad weather but which was ultimately made in time for the match between Italy and Sweden. It will be a special evening as the mayor of Naples Manfredi underlines: “It will be a unique event destined to remain in the history of national and international volleyball“. Having avoided the risk of having to resort to the PalaSele of Eboli which would have hosted the event in case of bad weather, there will be 5,932 lucky ticket holders who will be able to attend the event in Piazza del Plebiscito. The presence of Sergio Mattarella gives an extra touch to the evening, the President of the Republic is a great sports fan and will probably stop at the end of the match to say hello to Fefè De Giorgi’s Azzurri.
