Garlasco, Marchian oversights also on the DNA samples: not from Chiara’s body but from a spoon. Solving the crime without all these blunders would have been much simpler
One test tube can contain a sample of shorts. Or a t-shirt. It depends on the day. On 7 September 2007 the test tube «RIS005603» is the cutout of the pajama shorts soaked in blood of Chiara Poggiwhile on December 6 of the same year, on paper or, rather, in the registers, the piece becomes that of the pajama shirt.
No one appears to have touched the test tube. The garment changes in the minutes. But, as we know, when the inventory says one thing and the laboratory says another, it is the laboratory that is authentic. Or, at least, it is the rule with which the Parma Ris solved this mystery. A pajama that seems to have more lives than a cat. The t-shirt is «Join Fruits», then «Joy Fruits»; the brand is «Oviesse», then «Oviesse young».
And the cards don’t always accurately tell the same story. August 13, 2007 Alberto Stasi he says he saw Chiara on the stairs wearing pink pajamas, consisting of a t-shirt and shorts. On August 22nd he stated that he hadn’t really seen pink: between panic, shock and dim light he had “recognised” it.
On 7 September the RIS examined the two charges. The shirt, soaked in blood, does not show significant luminescence and no material is taken. The shorts, however, have yellowish areolas: two gussets are obtained, then inserted into the Falcon: «RIS005603», «Blood victim pajamas», and «RIS005604», «White victim pajamas». Then comes the dyscrasia. In the report of 6 December, «005603» becomes «a piece of fabric on the shirt», while 005604 remains a hem of the shorts.
The defense Stasis indicates it in the Memorandum as a possible confusion in the chain of custody. In 2025 the RIS replies that the minutes of September 7 and the final report are authentic: the two clippings came from the shorts.
The “I don’t remember” related to Garlasco
And that’s not the only inconsistency. A RIS report dated 4 September 2007 attests to the acquisition of a biological sample from Chiara’s body, intended for genetic comparisons.
Yet then-Capt Alberto Marinoheard by the Pavia Prosecutor’s Office on 10 September, declared that he did not remember that it had been sent to the department, thus explaining the choice to obtain the victim’s DNA from a teaspoon found in the house. A sample acquired on paper, but whose arrival in the laboratory is not remembered. The shirt returns, however, in the reconstruction of the attack.
The technical report of 12 December 2007 reports a possible trace of a bloody hand, directed from top to bottom, and projections on the trousers and legs. Then there is another chapter, different from the pajama clippings: that of the eluates, that is, the DNA extracts. Their fate is reconstructed in 2025 by the colonel Matteo Donghiafter the motions presented by the defense Stasis.
The elimination of important evidence
It emerges that the order to dispose of the eluates of case 3306/07 was given by the lieutenant colonel Alberto Marinoshortly after taking command of the Biology section in May 2016. On 15 September 2016, nine months after the Court of Cassation had made the conviction of Stasisthe «BioBank» freezer is turned off.
The photographs of 20 and 30 September then show the test tubes with the eluates in the special waste bags. The Ris explanation is that they were “processing intermediates”, not judicial findings. And so, while a test tube in 2007 can change clothing on paper and years later DNA extracts can end up in the waste without a dedicated report.
