From the Monster Park of Bomarzo to the Catacombs of Palermo, five Italian destinations for Halloween 2026 among ancient legends, mysteries, witches and surprising places.

There are places in Italy where the border between history and legend seems to dissolve, where gigantic stone creatures emerge from the vegetation, ancient monasteries guard thousands of human bones and the memory of witches, alchemists and mysterious rituals continues to fuel tales handed down for centuries. Places that do not need cinematographic sets or invented ghosts to evoke disturbing atmospheres, because their charm arises from a reality that is often more surprising than fantasy, made up of enigmatic symbols, popular beliefs and testimonies of a past in which the relationship with death was profoundly different from the contemporary one. Halloween 2026 thus becomes the opportunity to discover five unusual Italian destinationscrossing Renaissance gardens, cities linked to the legend of witches, Baroque chapels and catacombs in which time seems to have stopped, for a journey that combines the thrill of discovery with the sometimes disturbing beauty of our historical and cultural heritage.

The Sacred Forest of Bomarzo

Better known as Monster Park, it is a unique place of its kind. It is located in the heart of Tusciain the province of Viterboa stone’s throw from Rome. It is an enchanted garden in which, among the dense vegetation, they emerge gigantic monstrous sculpted figures directly into the rocks that dot the territory. Among the most impressive sculptures stand out there Hellmouth, the Dragon, the Tortoise and the Battle Elephant. This singular set of works with a strong symbolic value was created in 16th century by will of prince Near Orsiniprobably in memory of his deceased wife. The bizarre sculptures perhaps allude to an initiatory itinerary, and for centuries have challenged the visitor’s interpretation. Rediscovered in the mid-twentieth century after a long period of abandonment, the park has been open to the public ever since. And even today it retains its atmosphere intact, perfect for a Halloween trip full of arcane suggestions.

The Capuchin Crypt on Via Veneto in Rome

In the heart of the legendary Dolce Vita street lies one of the most sinister places in the capital. Part of the convent complex of Church of Santa Maria of the Conceptionfounded in the first half of the 17th century, the Crypt of the Capuchins offers a disconcerting “spectacle”: the environments that compose it are literally covered with human bones. These are the mortal remains of the monks who have inhabited the convent since XVII al XIX century; the walls are entirely covered with it. Tibiae, skulls and kneecaps form a phantasmagoric and alienating whole, desired by the monks as memento died. It is no coincidence that in the last room there is an eloquent inscription: «What you are, we were; what we are, you will be”. An invitation to reflect on the transience of earthly life, a recurring theme in the Baroque era, when the attitude towards death was very distant from that which characterizes the contemporary world. In short, a place light years away from the worldliness that can be felt outside. It is a perfect destination for Halloween, a modern and Americanized version of the ancient Samhaina Celtic New Year that marked the boundary between the living and the dead.

Benevento, the city of witches

Disturbing hags who, on full moon nights, gathered around a tree Of walnuts. According to tradition, the tree was ultimately cut down at the will of San Barbato, the Apostle of Sannio. The folklore linked to that imagery is still alive in the city today: just think of famous liquorfrom which the Award Witch for narrative. In the center, housed inside the Palazzo Paolo Vyou will find the Museum Janadedicated to the history and traditions linked to witches of Benevento.

The basement of the Sansevero Chapel in Naples

Located in the heart of Naplesthe eighteenth century Chapel Sansevero is famous for the virtuosic sculpture of Christ Veiled. But inside the monumental complex there is more. In the basement there are, in fact, two impressive «anatomical machines»mannequins that faithfully reproduce the venous and arterial system of the human body. The Chapel was commissioned by prince Of Sansevero, Raymond De Sangroas a family mausoleum. According to legend, the prince, a well-known alchemist and esotericist, discovered the secret to preserving the tissues of the human body intact. It is said that the two anatomical machines are actually the bodies of a man and a woman, two servants killed for a slight crime. Even today the two “mummies” are preserved in a display case and amaze visitors with their macabre realism. More than Halloween pumpkins…

The Capuchin Catacombs in Palermo

This famous cemetery is part of the Convent of the Capuchinsbuilt in 1621; it is located about two kilometers from the monumental heart of the city, represented by Building of the Normans and from Cathedral. It is the historic burial place of the monks and the main families of the Palermo nobility. In the corridors of the hypogeum there are approximately 8000 bodiesdressed in the habit or in bourgeois clothes. The narrow spaces are crowded with the remains of people of all ages, in an unreal silence worthy of a 70s noir. The overall “spectacle”, consisting of a forest of skeletons and mummified bodies hanging from the ceiling or closed in cases, is truly impressive. And it makes it the ideal place to spend a truly spooky Halloween.
