Meghan Markle, her father Thomas arrested in Florida: the investigation into images of child abuse

Thomas Markle, Meghan’s father, would have been arrested in Florida. The FBI investigations, the accusations and the statements of the Duchess of Sussex.

Meghan Markle’s name returns to the center of a legal case that risks taking on increasingly serious contours. His father, Thomas Markle Sr., 82, was reportedly arrested by FBI agents in Florida on Friday, November 6, as part of an international investigation into alleged possession of child pornography. The Daily Mail reported the news, reported by Page Six and several American newspapers, according to which federal agents intervened in the Lakeland care facility where the man resides after a series of serious health problems. At the moment there is no official confirmation of the arrest by the FBI.

A turning point that comes at the end of weeks of accusations, testimonies and investigations conducted between the United States, the Philippines and Mexico, and which involves a family already marked by years of public conflict. But this time the rift between Meghan and her father is not the center of the story: at the center there are images of alleged sexual abuse of minors, the origin and responsibility of which have yet to be ascertained.

The investigations in the Philippines and the thousands of images seized

The investigation originated in the Philippines, where Thomas Markle had lived with his son Thomas Jr. before returning to the United States. The latter, according to what was declared to the British press, discovered among his father’s personal effects some boxes containing images and videos attributable to possible sexual abuse of minors, deciding to contact the local authorities and the FBI.

Subsequent investigations led to the discovery of approximately 7,500 photographs and a video on electronic devices examined by the Philippine police. Interior Minister Jonvic Remulla reported that some of the material concerns children as young as ten or eleven years old. Investigators are trying to establish who the devices belonged to, who actually had access to the files and whether there is further responsibility.

The investigation also took on an international dimension following news of other suspicious material identified in a warehouse in Mexico previously used by Markle. The FBI had already communicated its willingness to collaborate with the Philippine authorities and verify possible violations of US federal law.

The situation became further complicated on November 5, when the authorities in Manila indicated Thomas Markle Jr., the man who had initially reported the discovery, as person of interesta person of investigative interest. A definition that does not equate to being formally investigated or accused, but which signals the investigators’ willingness to delve deeper into his possible role in the affair.

Thomas Markle Sr. has always denied the accusations, calling them false and claiming that he has never knowingly possessed material of this kind. It therefore remains essential to distinguish the content of the investigations, the news on the arrest and the possible ascertainment of criminal responsibility, which has not yet occurred.

Meghan Markle and the accusations known years before the case

What has emerged in recent weeks about the relationship between Meghan Markle and her father makes the matter even more delicate. The Duchess of Sussex said she was deeply troubled by the news and had already received information about allegations involving Thomas Markle in 2018, through a communication later linked to the British Metropolitan Police.

London police confirmed they received a letter in 2019 containing allegations relating to alleged misconduct committed outside the UK. The documentation had been shared with the Sussexes’ office, but not with foreign investigating authorities. A management into which an investigation was subsequently launched by the independent British police supervisory body.

Meghan explained that the decision to break off relations with her father and prevent him from meeting his children, Archie and Lilibet, was linked to the desire to protect them. A statement that has inevitably brought a family distance often recounted in the last eight years in a different light, especially through the media controversies following her marriage to Prince Harry.

Thomas Markle, former director of television lighting in Hollywood, did not attend his daughter’s wedding in 2018. Since then their relationship has remained interrupted, while the man’s health conditions have progressively worsened, until the amputation of his left leg in December 2025 and subsequent hospitalization in Florida.

The news of the alleged arrest now represents a possible decisive step in an investigation that has already spanned three countries. Any formal complaints, the judicial position of the eighty-two year old and above all the responsibility for the material identified remain to be clarified. Questions to which the investigations of the authorities, and not the declarations of family members, will have to provide answers.
