The Apple TV+ Sci-Fi Thriller series signed by Dan Erickson and Ben Stiller conquers the record of 27 nominations at the Emmy 2025, confirming himself as one of the most acclaimed television phenomena in recent years: that’s why that’s why
In the increasingly crowded panorama of streaming, Netflix has long taken on the role of the giant to beat. But the competition is certainly not to look at: Amazon Prime Videos, Disney+ and above all Apple TV+ are fighting with increasingly ambitious and original proposalsin an attempt to carve out your own recognizable identity.
For Apple TV+, the real turning point came three years after the debut of the platform in November 2019. It was with Split (Severance in original)the sci -fi thriller conceived by Dan Erickson and produced by Ben Stillerthat the service has finally found its spearhead.
The project had a very long gestation: Ten years ago, Ben Stiller read the script of the pilot written by Erickson for the first time, then a perfect stranger. The idea, immediately, was fascinating and disturbing at the same time: a man broken by a personal tragedy decides to undergo a radical experiment that divides his conscience in two. On the one hand, working life; on the other, the private one. Neither half has the other. A premise that evolves into a disturbing journey within the mysterious corporation Lumonwhere nothing is as it seems.
“Slipping”explains Ben Stiller in an interview with Variety, “It could only be produced by Apple”. And judging by success, he was right: Today the series is considered the top product of the platformnot only for the very high technical and narrative level, but also for the depth with which it addresses very current issues such as alienation, pain and inhumanization of office work.
Dan Erickson conceived the series in a dark moment of his life. After getting a master in writing for TV, he had found himself working in an anonymous manufacturer of … doors. Such a frustrating experience as to inspire the desire – to the limit of the surreal – to be able to “separate” one’s conscience to face the 8 working hours without emotional involvement. From this vision was born Split.
Split and the record of nominations at the Emmy 2025
After the triumph of the Oscars, the television world also prepares to celebrate its excellence. During the official announcement of the Television Academy, broadcast live by the Wolf Theater by North Hollywood in Los Angeles, Split has conquered the absolute primacy: 27 nominations to Emmy Awards 2025more than any other series in the race.
The 77th edition of the Emmy will be presented by Nate Bargatze and will air on Sky and Now on the night between Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September.
The series has already won two Emmy in 2022 – one for the musical composition and the other for the design of the main theme – and continues to claim consensus with a score of 8.7 On IMDB and a sensational 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Split It is a visual and narrative experience of rare intensity. The direction – largely signed by Ben Stiller – exploits in a masterful way the use of color, the geometric and claustrophobic spaces of the Lumon Industries, and a construction of the stratified and engaging characters.
The series, as the title suggests, offers a powerful metaphor for the separation between personal and professional life. A very current theme, amplified by the disturbing and surreal atmosphere that pervades every episode.
Split, the plot and the cast
The protagonist is Adam Scott (Big Little Lies), in the role of Mark Scout, coordinator of a team inside the mysterious Lumon Industries. The company’s employees underwent a surgical procedure that completely separates their memories: what happens within the office remains there, and vice versa. When Mark begins to suspect that something does not come back, a mystery opens that forces him to question everything: his work, his identity, and even the very concept of freedom.
In the second season, the protagonists face the dramatic consequences of the violation of the “split” protocol, and their reality becomes increasingly unstable.
The cast is of the highest level: Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Zach Cherry, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, Patricia Arquette, Gwendoline Christie, Merritt Weaverand even the voice of Keanu Reeves.
With SplitApple TV+ has shown that he can compete with equal arms with the streaming giants, focusing on an original, visually powerful and thematic narrative. The 27 nominations at the Emmy 2025 are not only a recognition to the technical and artistic value of the series, but also the proof that The public is increasingly hungry for stories capable of surprising and making you think.
