In Italy there are fewer and fewer children. The most recent data on the demographic balance indicate that 2025 could mark a new historic low for births, confirming a trend that has been eroding the country’s social structure, economy and future prospects for years. Istat notes a constant slowdown, with a number of newborns now far from the levels necessary to guarantee generational turnover.
The concern does not only concern Italy but the entire European continent, as underlined by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella: «It is a vital issue for our country and for the whole of Europe. The birth rate is the main indicator for measuring the hope of a people.”
Between an aging population, economic precariousness, stagnant wages and difficulties in reconciling work and family life, the demographic crisis is consolidated as one of the most profound structural emergencies of our time.
