From 468 euros per year for one gym in Rome to over 1000 euros for a hotel in Palermo. Here’s how much they have to account for spending Italian companies starting from March 31st. In fact, the obligation of the so -called Cat Nat is triggered, the insurance against natural disasters.
The cautious policy obligation concerns all companies with registered office in Italy or with a permanent organization in the country. Only farms remain excluded. The Cat Nat ensures against damage to corporate goods (buildings, plants, machinery and equipment) caused by earthquakes, floods, landslides, floods and floods. On the other hand, phenomena such as hailstorms, trumpets of air and water bombs do not include, for which if you want, additional guarantees must be stipulated. The insurance may provide for franchises up to 15% of the damage, while the ceilings vary according to the insured sum: up to 1 million euros there will be no compensation limits, between 1 and 30 million the insurance must guarantee at least 70% of the damage suffered, while beyond this threshold the ceilings will be established freely between the parties.
How much does the catastrophic policy cost? Six concrete cases
But how much does this new compulsory coverage cost to companies? With Facile.it we took into consideration six concrete cases. There are six different realities (restaurant, car repair shop, hotel, pack of packaging/clothing, shop in front of the food and gym road) in three different cities (Milan, Rome and Palermo), calculating the average of the annual prize on ten insurance groups.
A restaurant With a property of a value of 300 thousand euros and equipment for 100 thousand euros will have to pay an annual premium of 343.50 euros in Milan, a figure that rises to 401 euros in Rome and reaches 469 euros in Palermo, a city considered more at risk. Same goes for a self -effort With a 400 thousand euro building and equipment for 200 thousand euros: in Milan the prize will be 359 euros, in Rome of 434 euros, while in Palermo it reaches 551 euros. For a hotelthe costs rise, given the greater entity of the capital to be ensured. With a property of a value of 1 million euros and equipment for 500 thousand euros, the annual prize in Milan will be 703.50 euros, while in Rome it is slightly higher, 720.50 euros. In Palermo, however, shopping grows considerably, reaching 1,033.50 euros, confirming the incidence of the geographical position on insurance costs. Also for a gymwith a building worth 500 thousand euros and equipment for 600 thousand euros, prices vary significantly between the three cities. If in Milan the annual prize is 651 euros, in Rome it will drop to 468 euros, while in Palermo it will go back to 609.50 euros. Similar the situation for a Food shop facing the streetwith a real estate value of 300 thousand euros and 150 thousand euros of equipment: in Milan the cost will be 370.50 euros, in Rome 377 euros, while in Palermo it will rise to 422 euros. Finally, for A laboratory of packaging and clothingwhich has a building worth 600 thousand euros and machinery and equipment for 300 thousand euros, the annual prize will be 482 euros in Milan, 462.50 euros in Rome and 572.50 euros in Palermo.
It is evident that the geographical position of the company affects the insurance premium. With the same insured capital, Palermo is always the city with the highest costs, while Rome and Milan have more contained differences. This depends on factors such as the frequency and intensity of the calamitous events recorded in the area, the vulnerability of the buildings and the type of activity carried out.

The insurance obligation was introduced to protect Italian companies from damage caused by natural disasters, increasingly frequent. According to an Facile.it and MuP Research survey, over 278 thousand micro and small businesses had undergone losses for about 3 billion euros in the last year in September 2024. The obligation starts from March 31st and companies that do not sign the Cat Nat policy will no longer be able to access public contributions in the event of natural disaster. A change of strategy therefore: instead of intervening only with post-event aid the responsibility for compensation on private insurance is moved.
