The researchers of the School of Dental Medicine of Pennsylvania have created an effective chewing-gum in the prevention of different viruses, including Covid.
A chewing gum that neutralizes viruses such as flu, herpes and the COVID-19: This is the result of a study carried out by the University of Pennsylvania. It could use, in the future, to avoid vaccination references and stings: this chewing rubber, in fact, contains a protein extracted from Fagiolo Lablab which has proven capable of blocking viral transmission through saliva. The advantages of using this method, compared to traditional drugs and vaccines, would be very relevant: first of all it is easy to use, and in fact one of the primary objectives of the project is precisely that of being able to have a method of viral prevention also in emergency and in high -risk public environments as airports, schools, hospitals and public environments could be with many people. The Chewing-Gum would in fact make it possible to have one Immediate barrier against viruses oral or respiratory transmissible. In addition, chewing-gum is easy to use and find because it would not require a medical prescription, it does not need refrigeration or special preservation methods such as current vaccines and is a particularly suitable solution to children, because little invasive and at all painful. In the case of particularly impacting epidemics, it could also constitute a fundamental support for traditional vaccines.
The study was recently published on “Molecular Therapy” scientific journal And he was led by Professor Henry Daniell. The next step will be to obtain authorization to carry out the clinical studies on humans, which obviously will prove to be fundamental to verify safety and effectiveness. The mechanism of action of the new Chewing-Gum is very simple: the Lablab beans contain a natural lectin, called Frilwhich is able to bind to the sugars on the surface of many viruses, therefore to capture them and keep them prisoners in the saliva before they manage to arrive in the cells and then infect them. The moment we chew the chewing-gum, therefore, our saliva comes into contact with the lectin Fril who activates to capture the viruses: the tests carried out so far in the laboratory have shown one reduction of viral charge equal to 95%. But the research will not stop here, because the team of researchers has already declared that experiments are also underway to understand if by varying the product you can also go on to contrast viruses -as for example that ofaviaria– which are increasingly a global threat to the planet.
