Crans-Montana, the mystery of denied medical records (and 75 thousand euros bill for the injured)

The medical documents essential for the trials and rehabilitation of the Constellation wounded are missing, but Switzerland sends the economic details.

Pain and anger cannot subside. Almost four months after Crans-Montana massacre (the fire of Constellationsspouses bar Jessica and Jacques Morettiwhere on New Year’s Eve 41 young people died, including six Italians, and over 100 were injured) the practices of the Swiss they continue to torment heartbroken parents.

The families of the injured – some very seriously and still in rehabilitation – denounce that “Swiss hospitals do not send us medical records (essential for trials, ed.) but rather invoices for the care received shortly after the fire”. The figures also cause indignation: for a hospitalization of just 15 hours, before the helicopter transfer toNiguarda hospital in Milanthey are accounted for from 17,000 to 75,000 euros.

The shock of the invoices in the rubble of the Constellation

The documents, sent via email, indicate that those sums will not have to be paid by the families, but the economic details relating to the first hours of hospitalization in facilities such as that of Zionwhere the boys were rescued before the airlift was set in motion between Switzerland and Italy. “More than insult to injury,” he comments Umberto Marcuccifather of the sixteen year old Manfredi who survived the fire, “for all of us it was a shock to see that email, which arrived without any warning, with figures without any explanation which more than anything resemble an hourly rate.”

Meanwhile, the families are still waiting for the medical records, which however do not arrive, and which would instead be necessary considering that many children are still hospitalized or undergoing rehabilitation after very serious burns and lung damage by virtue of which, to continue the recovery process, it is useful to know in detail the treatments carried out in the first hours following the fire.

Diplomacy and guarantees for the Canton of Valais

In the meantime, the note on the accounting documents which specifies that the payment must not be made does not reassure mothers and fathers in our house who ask for clarity and guarantees: they want the certainty that the costs will be entirely covered by the Canton of Valais and that it Italian state should not intervene. To discuss this delicate issue, the Italian ambassador to Switzerland, Gian Lorenzo Cornadowill have a series of meetings with the Swiss authorities in the next few days, including Bern and the Valaisprecisely for an official confirmation of what has already been established: healthcare costs are entirely borne by the Swiss authorities, not by the Italian ones nor by the families of the victims.

The ambassador expresses the parents’ indignation: «In the face of a frightening tragedy, I understand that receiving such a document can hurt and lead to a return to tragedy, but it is a recurring practice in Swiss». The lawyer is clearer Domenico Radicelawyer for several families of injured Italians, who speaks openly of inadequate management: «Regardless of who will have to pay, sending invoices in such a context is quite scandalous and would have required more attention. For families, the limit is full.”

The expansion of the investigation and those responsible for the fire

On the investigation front, the number of people under investigation for the crime rises to 13 Crans-Montana massacrecaused by the fire triggered by pyrotechnic light fountains, which set fire to the sound-absorbing ceiling panels in the basement. There Prosecutor’s Office of Sion in addition to the Municipality of Crans Montana also involved the political leaders of the old administration Chermignonin office until 2017, before the merger between the two communities.
