The papamobile with the coffin of Pope Francis crossed Piazza Venezia, then along via dei Fori Imperiali up to the Colosseum, welcomed along the journey from compact crowd wings.
Fedeli, Roman citizens and tourists greeted the passage of the pontiff with long applause, some of them visibly moved.
On the vehicle, the simple wooden coffin, without decorations, remains clearly visible while the papamobile proceeds at a step support towards the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where the Pope will be buried.
Also on Corso Vittorio Emanuele the tribute is renewed: applause, selfies, waving of handkerchiefs and even some affectionate cry, such as “Daje Francesco”, mix in a spontaneous and popular greeting.
The basilica will remain closed for the whole day and reopen tomorrow to allow the faithful to pay homage to the pontiff’s tomb.
