The spread of FTTH optical fiber is transforming Italian cities and small villages: digital services, local economy, smart cities and new opportunities
In recent years we have understood how much technology is essential to make critical digital services work smoothly: stable video calls, real-time telemedicine, immediate online payments and more efficient Public Administration platforms. All this is possible thanks to an infrastructure that is often invisible, but crucial for the country’s development: optical fiber.
If its presence is now a consolidated reality in large cities, in small villages the spread of FTTH network – the fiber that reaches directly into homes – is marking a historic change. In September 2025 Open Fiber has made FTTH connections available for 15.3 million real estate units, with a network that runs along 160 thousand kilometers of infrastructure.
More services and less isolation
In isolated territories, a stable connection means access to opportunities previously reserved for large centres: remote medical consultations, online teaching, remote working, digital help desks. Reducing the digital divide means guaranteeing equal rights to citizens and allow villages to no longer be synonymous with renunciation and isolation.
In cities, fiber enables transformation into smart cities (and smart villages): traffic monitoring, intelligent management of urban services, adaptive lighting and innovative safety systems. Without a fast and stable network, all this would remain a dead letter.
Fiber optics is also an economic driver. In small municipalities it allows the development of digital tourism, local e-commerce and online bookings. A new residential attraction fueled by remote working is emerging, with young professionals and families choosing villages as a place to live and work, bringing value to shops, restaurants and hospitality.
Security and monitoring of the territory
An element that is often little known is the fiber’s ability to monitor the territory using fiber sensing technologies. The cables can detect vibrations and movements, contributing to landslide prevention, structural checks on bridges and tunnels, seismic surveys and emergency management.
Fiber optics is not just technology: it is an infrastructure that contributes to determining the quality of life and the adaptive capacity of territories. Italy is experiencing a historical transformation, and for once cities and villages are traveling in the same direction. Where fiber arrives, services, opportunities and a possible future arrive.
