After the driving license and health card, the application will allow you to upload new electronic documents but for the identity card you will have to wait until the end of the legislature.
The circle of digital citizenship is finally about to close in Italy too. The date to mark in the diary is February 2027moment in which the smartphone will finally become our new electronic wallet thanks to the IT-Wallet of the IO app.
The Prime Ministerial Decree signed last February 18 brings with it a communication that many have been waiting for for some time: in addition to the driving license and health card, the digital wallet will gradually registry certificates, social security documents, educational qualifications, electoral card and, in perspective, the entire set of credentials today issued on paper or plastic by the PA. There electronic identity card is expected by the end of the legislature.
In essence, the provision requires all public administrations to make their certifications available in digital format, with the aim of creating a personal archive accessible from the telephone containing official certificates verifiable by the competent authorities. It is good to remember: all documents uploaded have and will continue to have legal valuejust like the paper versions and plastic cards.
Increasingly digital citizens
No more experiments, no more fragmentation, also thanks to the concrete participation of Italian citizens. The numbers speak for themselves and only tell about technological adoption, but a cultural change now irreversible. Italians have activated IT-Wallet in the IO app over 10 million times, with 17.3 million documents uploaded in total.
“Exceeding 10 million activations demonstrates two things. The first is that citizens willingly adopt digital services when they are useful and simple to use. The second is that this Government has made a winning choice, widely appreciated also within the EU. Furthermore, we gave full control to the citizensbecause IT-Wallet does not necessarily replace physical documents but offers, to those who wish, an additional way to simplify daily life and make the relationship with the Public Administration more immediate”declared the Undersecretary to the Presidency of the Council with responsibility for technological innovation and digital transition Alessio Butti.
ME instead of SPID?
The question has been around for some time, but now it is starting to have concrete contours: Can the IO app become an alternative to SPID? The answer today is “not quite yet”, but the direction is clear. SPID was born as an authentication system, while IO is transforming into a complete ecosystem that includes identities, documents and interaction with the Public Administration.
With the integration of the IT Wallet and the evolution towards European digital identity standards, IO could progressively absorb many of the functions currently delegated to the SPIDsimplifying the user experience and reducing fragmentation. In other words: fewer passwords, fewer providers, fewer steps. More immediacy and more control.
