In Pavia, a new investigation closure notice has been served on Andrea Sempio, under investigation for the murder of Chiara Poggi
A crucial step in the investigation into the Garlasco crime has concluded. The Pavia Prosecutor’s Office has in fact notified ad Andrea Sempio the new notice of conclusion of the preliminary investigations. This is the second measure of this type against him, after that of last May. The 38-year-old is being investigated for voluntary manslaughter aggravated by cruelty and abject motives Chiara Poggikilled in Garlasco on 13 August 2007.
What changes now for the defense
The provision, known as 415 bis, is a formal step but far from secondary. From this moment the defense of Example will be able to access the file of documents collected by the Prosecutor’s Office in recent months, present briefs, produce documents and request any further investigations. The same rights belong to the other subjects involved in the procedure.
Among the most recent hearings is that of Luciano Garofanoformer commander of the Parma RIS, heard last September 25th for over an hour and a half. His examination would have covered aspects of the scientific investigations conducted in 2007, including the findings linked to the bicycle of Alberto Stasi and genetic analyses. On the same days, prosecutors also interviewed some soldiers who had taken part in the 2017 investigations.
The next steps linked to the Garlasco crime
The notification of 415 bis does not automatically imply a request for indictment. The Pavia magistrates will first have to evaluate the memories and elements that the defense will present. Only then will they decide whether to proceed with the request for trial or dismiss the case.
A possible indictment of Example it would also open up new scenarios for Alberto Stasidefinitively convicted of the same murder. Regarding the review of the trial, the moves of the Prosecutor’s Office towards Example could be intertwined with the initiatives already proposed by the defense of Stasis. However, these are developments that depend entirely on decisions yet to be made.
