Garlasco, the story of the discovery of the body: «There was fury»

The carabinieri who entered the house in Garlasco on 13 August 2007 remembered the violence of Chiara Poggi’s crime: «There was blood everywhere»

The years pass, but the images of that morning of August 13, 2007 cannot help but remain imprinted. Roberto PenniniMarshal of the Carabinieri at the time, was on rest when he received the call from his colleagues. We needed photos of the crime scene in via Pascoli, in Garlasco. Pennini therefore showed up at the barracks, took two cameras and reached the house. Here is the story in the Wednesday 18 February episode of «Mattino Cinque».

The crime scene in Garlasco

«I found Alberto Stasi leaning on a wall with a colleagueit seemed quite normal to me”, says Pennini. In the courtyard there were the 118 staff and the doctor who had just checked in. The marshal asked for gloves and shoes, then entered. «The scene was horrible. The images you see on television do not reflect reality. There was an impressive amount of blood which suggested a very violent cruelty on the part of the person who attacked Chiara.”

Pennini photographed the body with both cameras. Once out, the shoes were completely stained. “It was such a bad event that I still have everything about that day in my mind,” he confesses.

The fury towards Chiara

Colonel Gennaro Cassese, who also spoke on Mattino 5, confirmed the impression of a crime out of the ordinary. «This was no ordinary murder. I immediately noticed the cruelty of the killer,” he said. The corridor leading to the bedroom, the bathroom and the cellar was marked by “a lot of blood”. And the so-called “blood gorges” were far from each other. This meant that Chiara Poggi had been hit several times and in different places in the housenot in one place.

«The thing that immediately appeared was the fury», reiterated Cassese. The bloody projections on the walls testified to the violence of the attack. A dynamic which, according to the officer, reinforced the idea of a repeated and ferocious attack.

The detail of the folding door

Among the elements that remained imprinted in Cassese’s memory there is also «a sort of bloodstain on the right side of the folding door.” Streaks that resembled the victim’s hair, “as if the girl had been supported to open the door”. A detail that would suggest that the door was closed at the time of the attackas demonstrated by the blood splashes on the surface.

Years pass, as we were saying, but the testimonies of the carabinieri paint a picture of extreme violence. A murder which, as both officers reiterated, was not “normal”. How they are not normal countless errors judicial and investigative processes which, even today, do not allow us to discover the truth.
