An incorrect piece of data communicated to the investigators marked the turning point that put Stasi in prison for over 11 years.
In the last few hours, among the supporters of the guilt of Alberto Stasi for the murder of his girlfriend Chiara Poggi occurred on August 13, 2007 in the family house in Garlascothe recurring leitmotif is that even if there had been errors in the tests that had detected traces of the victim’s DNA on the pedals of Stasi’s bicycle, that clue would not have been central in the investigations and in the trial which ended with the former Bocconi student being sentenced to 16 years.
But just read the arrest decree against Stasi issued on 24 September 2007 by the prosecutor of the Vigevano Prosecutor’s Office Rosa Muscio to understand that reality is totally different.
The decisive weight of the indictment signed by the Prosecutor’s Office
That evening Stasi was stopped at the end of a dramatic interrogation during which Muscio contested the fact that on the pedals of his burgundy bicycle they had been found traces of blood of Chiara. And at that point, under the eyes of photographers and cameras and surrounded by a crowd shouting “murderer, you bastard”, Stasi was taken to prison.
The arrest was not then validated by the investigating judge and, above all, following subsequent investigations, the certainty that the organic material found was blood has disappeared. But that episode marked a definitive turning point in the investigations, which focused only on Stasi.
The relationship between Ris and biological concentration
Muscio wrote on 24 September 19 years ago: «From the analyzes conducted by the technical consultants appointed by this prosecutor it emerged that on the bicycle it marks Umberto Dei Milanseized by the Stasi on 20 August 2007, traces of blood attributable to the victim were found inside her home.” It was the prosecutor who carried out the investigations requested by the prosecutor Ris of Parmawho had sent a note to the Prosecutor’s Office on the day of his arrest. «In particular, in the preliminary report on the biological tests carried out on the samples taken from the pedals of the bicycle indicated above (see report of the technical operations of 11 September 2007) it is highlighted that the DNA profile extracted from the samples themselves can be traced back beyond any reasonable doubt to the genetic profile of Chiara Poggi, as indicated in detail in the preliminary report dated 24.9.2007 which here reports “the first measurements carried out on 11 September 2007 on the pedals of the burgundy brown men’s bicycle, brand Umberto Dei Milano, were subjected to biomolecular tests as a single sample, preliminarily initialed as a bu_p sample. This sample was subjected to DNA extraction and subsequent purification and quantification via Real Time. The DNA thus extracted showed a concentration of approximately 2.8 ng/ul of female DNA only”.
For Muscio, «taking into account that the bicycle on which Poggi Chiara’s traces of blood were found on 13 August 2007, was in the exclusive possession of the suspect who was at home alone as his parents were on holiday at their home in Spotorno (they in fact returned to Garlasco only in the afternoon of 13 August 2007), this element unequivocally demonstrates that the Stasi must have trampled on the victim’s blood».
The sighting of the witness and the crux of the second vehicle
But on the pedals, in addition to the blood issue, there is a mystery that has never been clarified.
On the morning of the crime a witness, Franca Bermanihad seen a black women’s bicycle in front of the Poggi house, different from the one seized from Stasi. In the second appeal process, however, one came into play second bike from the suspect’s family, black.
But that did not correspond to the one seen by the witness.
