Garlasco, what doesn’t add up about Stasi’s DNA on bicycle pedals

“Clean” DNA and in anomalous quantities on the pedals of Stasi’s bike in Garlasco: the experts’ doubts on one of the key pieces of evidence in an interview with Alessandro De Giuseppe

In the story of Alessandro De Giuseppe, journalist of The Hyenasthe breaking point of the Garlasco case is technical rather than judicial: on the pedals of Alberto Stasi’s bicycle would have been found “Clean” DNA and in very high concentrationequal to 2.8 nanograms per microliter. A quantity which, according to the experts, is not compatible with surfaces such as pedals or shoe soles, where picograms are normally recovered, i.e. minimal and often contaminated traces. Certainly not such a high and pure finding.

DNA anomalies

Forensic practice teaches that external surfaces, exposed to mud, sweat and abrasion, yield “dirty” DNA. Here, however, we are talking about intact, “clean” material. This is why experts such as the medical examiner Francesco Maria Avato and the geneticist Matteo Fabbri they would have expressed strong doubts. Even the experts Alberto Porta And Daniele Occhetti they would have defined the quantity found as “anomalous” for bicycle pedals and shoe soles.

Furthermore, the DNA would have “appeared” after one phone call to detectives from someone who was investigating the case (not better identified), just when elements charged to the Stasi were needed. The genetic material would appear on the pedals in that particular state just fifteen minutes later. The bike had previously been scanned with Luminol without results. Has anyone put in their DNA? A question that, at least for the moment, remains unanswered. The fact remains that it is very strange to find such a concentrated and above all pure quantity of genetic material.

The position of Andrea Sempio

Sempio currently finds himself in a complex situation: the DNA under Chiara’s nails Poggi is his; the receipt appears as a possible alibi procured. Until the alleged attempt to corruption of the former prosecutor Mario Vendittion which the judiciary will express its opinion. In any case, he is undoubtedly in a very difficult position. However, i witnesses that morning they saw other people: neither Sempio (who was only seen in the afternoon, in some photos documenting his passage) nor Stasi. The worker Marco Muschitta he mentioned in 2007 that he had seen, on the morning of August 13, a blonde girl (with bob and sunglasses). He was cycling away from the area of the Poggi house, holding a blunt object (the murder weapon?). The worker recanted shortly afterwards, calling himself a “stupid” and being deemed unreliable by the judges. De Giuseppe mentions another witness, who however he cannot speak about: «Muschitta is not the only one who saw what he saw. I found another person who confirms the same scene.”

What’s cooking

The evidentiary incident is another particularly delicate topicbecause after eighteen years, despite current advanced techniques, the analyzes are very complicated.

For De Giuseppe, the Stasi conviction is based on clues, certainly not on solid evidence. The service of The Hyenas promises to get into the matter when “the time is ripe”. That is, when the judiciary has finished carrying out the investigations currently underway. Until that moment, there are no certainties. However, the questions are multiplying.
