Caste won. The anti-system revolutionary was saved by the system. The enemy of power was saved by a power game. The barricadera of social centers was saved by the privileges of the mandarins of Brussels. Ilaria Salis obtained immunity but lost face: by one vote (306 to 305) she managed to hold on to her little golden chair. But she threw her whole life away, clearly demonstrating that it was all a bluff: no popular struggles, she likes the private VIP club. No demonstrations in the square, better the secret voting mess. And if in the sit-ins she asked politicians a thousand times to be frank, today as an honorable member she revealed herself: politicians must not be frank. At most snipers.
Thanks to immunity, Ilaria Salis becomes the queen of the most chaste caste there is. From the occupation of houses to the occupation of seats, it is ultimately a short step. And the first thing that strikes you in the story is that an exponent of the radical left was saved by that institution that the radical left has always indicated as the devil: immunityprecisely, demonized and neglected, pointed to and defined as the principle of all evil and all abuse. At least, as long as others were using it. Now, however, the same immunity has suddenly become the “victory of democracy, the rule of law and anti-fascism”. The famous anti-fascism with built-in privilege: this morning, I woke up, and I found a salary in Brussels. Oh beautiful hello.
But, in addition to the fact itself, what is also striking is the way in which this presumed victory of democracy in caste sauce developed. In fact, it wasn’t enough for Mandarin Ilaria to save herself with a vote from the European Parliament, which is already a rather bizarre thing for those who climbed onto the barricades fighting against the institutions. He also did it by resorting to the secret vote, a necessary requirement for any self-respecting party. And therefore: hidden negotiations, indecent proposals, exchange votes (if you give one Salis to me, I then give an Ursula you), fake illnesses, specious absences, abstentions, tricks, gimmicks, games, tricks and other amenities from dusty backrooms, which are the worst that politics can show. This was therefore the revolution he dreamed of Salis? Is this why he burned his youth in social centers? To be able to be the protagonist, or rather the beneficiary, of this unworthy cow market?
The votes of the centre-right
It ended, as we were saying, 306 to 305, with 17 abstentions and around a hundred absentees. Since the votes from the left were not enough to save the MEP, there were certainly also votes from the center-right in her favor. We are talking about members of the European People’s Party. “He’s someone who calls himself center-right,” he commented bitterly Matteo Salviniimplying “it is said” but in reality it is not. The secret vote, obviously, favored the snipers. And why would some members of the center-right have acted like snipers by voting against party recommendations to save a member of the left? There was talk of betrayals and fifth columns. But also of exchanges of favors with the vote of confidence in Ursula von der Leyen and/or with votes on other measures and/or with votes on other bailouts. Whatever the truth, one thing is certain: it stinks.
Also because, it must be said, the rescue of Salis it goes against the normal criteria adopted by the European Parliament in votes of this kind. In fact, up to now immunity has never been granted for crimes committed before the parliamentary mandate, as is the case with Ilaria Salis, accused of going around with criminals to break the heads of Christians, before being elected. The Italian house occupier, therefore, not only enjoyed a privilege, but a privilege squared, because she was privileged even over her privileged honorable colleagues. The crime she is accused of does not even remotely relate to the exercise of her mandate. It pertains to the previous life. And so in this case immunity becomes impunity. That is, it turns into an explicit message for anyone who wants to commit violence or illegality: if you want to do it, go ahead, but then take care to get elected to the European Parliament. That way you’ll get away with it. Isn’t it wonderful? The election better than the clothes washer, like the Dash of Carouselthe whitest thing you can’t get. A kind of miracle that makes you pure and immaculate, white as snow. In practice it restores lost virginity. To the point that even Ilaria Salis it can be called chaste.
