“I’m calm, everything is fine”. The data being examined by the Cagliari RIS

The 37-year-old underwent anthropometric measurements in Milan: the findings will be compared with the new analyzes on Chiara Poggi’s body

It is in Milan, in via Mangiagalli, that today Andrea Sempio was summoned for an objective examination useful to take – perhaps – a further step in one of the most controversial investigations of the last twenty years: that on the murder of Chiara Poggiwhich occurred on 13 August 2007 in Garlasco.

Andrea Sempio, now 37 years old, has in fact returned to the center of the investigation. This time not for an interrogation, but for a technical exam: anthropometric measurements.

He arrived accompanied by his lawyers, Liborio Cataliotti And Angela Tacciaand by the technical consultant Armando Palmegiani. A few minutes of silence in front of the entrance to the Institute of Forensic Medicine, then the door closed behind him. Inside, medical examiners took his height, weight, limbs, feet and ankles.

A detailed protocol, which will be used to compare the data with the re-evaluation of the lesions on Chiara’s body and with them blood trace analysis conducted by the RIS of Cagliari.

Upon exit, Sempio’s comment was brief, almost disarming: «Yes, yes, absolutely. Everything OK”.

A phrase that betrays the desire to appear calm, even if the attention on him has returned to a level that hasn’t happened for years.

The meaning of the exam

This is not a new appraisal, his lawyers explain, but a objective significance. The results will be analyzed later, when experts from the prosecution and defense compare body proportions and compatibility with the crime scene.
«Today – explained the lawyer Cataliotti – simply anthropometric measurements were carried out. It is not a consultancy, it is not an expert opinion. It is understandable that there will be an appraisal, but it was not the object of today’s activity.”

At his side, the consultant Palmegiani defined the procedure “a linear activity, conducted with maximum collaborationHe added:
«Andrea did everything with availability. Nothing changes from a defensive point of view. We don’t know what the final use of the data will be, but there are no particular elements to worry about.”

Behind the calm of the declarations, the wait remains. The measurements will help to understand whether some details of the wounds on the victim’s body or the bloodstains at the crime scene can match Sempio’s build.

A new chapter in the Garlasco case

After almost two decades, the Poggi case he keeps rewriting himself. The reopening of the investigation into Sempio – a friend of the victim’s brother and already among those under investigation in the past – is intertwined with a parallel thread: the one involving the former deputy prosecutor of Pavia, Mario Vendittiinvestigated in Brescia for corruption in judicial documents.
According to the prosecution, in 2017 he favored Sempio’s dismissal in exchange for money.

Meanwhile, the Court of Review of Brescia canceled the seizures ordered against two former carabinieri, Silvio Sapone and Giuseppe Spoto, who had collaborated with Venditti in the investigations at the time. The judges spoke of “technical reasons”: there was a lack of time perimeter and keywords for searches on the seized devices.

Everything, therefore, moves again within an intricate judicial labyrinth, where every gesture – a measurement, a sentence, a detail – can become a clue.

The weight of history

Eighteen years later, Garlasco it remains an open wound in the Italian collective memory. Procedural certainty – the definitive condemnation of Alberto Stasi to 16 years in prison — he never erased his doubts. The shadow of alternative leads, of inconsistencies, of investigation errors has continued to grow over the years.

Now, the new measurements reopen a fragment of that history. A tape measure and an ankle caliper: cold instruments, but loaded with enormous symbolic weight. Measuring a body, in this case, means try to measure the truth.

Sempio, upon exiting, quickly says hello and walks away. No further comments. Just that short phrase that sounds like a defense or a mantra: «I’m calm. Everything OK”.
