In South Korea there are no more clear boundaries between stage and set. MY Bias is showing!, The new production that leads to a fascinating short circuit between the world of fandom and the thin line that separates an idol from its private life. At the center of the story, taken from the successful webtoon of the same name, there are two faces destined to capture international attention: Kevin of the Omega X, here at his debut as an actor, and the actor Kim Kang Min, already loved for his freshness and intensity.
If the webtoon had already made it fall in love for its bold intertwining, the series amplifies the effect: ten episodes of twenty minutes each, ready to become the new global obsession. It is a story that speaks of whispered emotions, of the risk of crossing the border between idol and fans, but above all of the fragility with which we discovered human, beyond the stage and the lights.
For Kevin, which in Omega X represents one of the most recognizable rumors, this is the first time in front of the camera. Not a cameo, not an experiment: a leading role, chosen precisely because it is capable of reflecting that constant dialogue with the fandom that he knows well. Kim Kang Min, for his part, brings the naturalness of those who know how to transform a character into flesh and blood on set, making Choi Si-Yeol much more than a fantasy rock star. Together, they create a chemistry that does not just respect the written page, but transcends it.
Behind the direction there is Baek Min Hee, already acclaimed for having given new form to the language of the Coreani web drama. With My Bias Is Showing! sign a direction that plays of subtraction: looks, breaks, silences, become more powerful than any declaration. A visual grammar that leaves room for the viewer, and which seems to be made especially for a product destined to travel well beyond the Korean borders.
That’s why this double interview is not only one behind the scenes: it is the story of two careers who cross at a precise moment, when the K-pop and the K-Dama are no longer separated worlds but parts of the same global ecosystem.
Congratulations on your debut as an actor! How did you feel when they offered you the role of Na Ae-Joon in My Bias is showing!?
Kevin: At the beginning I was very grateful, but at the same time I was worried about not being able to interpret the character well and satisfy the spectators.
What he excited more in entering to be part of My Bias is showing! Like Choi Si-Yeol?
Kim Kang Min: The fact of playing the role of an idol for the first time was very interesting for me.
What was your first reaction by reading the script and discovering the AE-Joon personality?
Kevin: I thought that there were similarities between me and he, especially at the character level, and this has made it easier to study and understand it.
When you read the script for the first time, what struck you about the character of Si-Yeol?
Kim Kang Min: In the initial part of the script, Si-Yeol’s cold and cynical side was expressed in a very vivid way, and I thought it was its mysterious charm, the aspect that struck me most at the first reading.
This series is taken from a very successful webtoon. Did you know him even before entering the project?
Kevin: I did not know the original work, but I got to read it after accepting the role of Na Ae-Joon.
The series was born from a webtoon with a big fanbase. Did this put pressure on it or has it given you motivation?
Kim Kang Min: Knowing to participate in a drama taken from a popular webtoon with such a strong plot made me excited to give my best, but at the same time a little fearful, asking me if I would really have managed to play the role well.
AE-Joon is a high school teacher but also a long-standing Si-Yeol fan. How did you prepare to play this mix of professionalism and fandom?
Kevin: Communication with my fans helped me a lot. Talking to them as Idol allowed me to better understand their point of view and what they think while they support me with love. For the part of the teacher, having no direct experience, I thought of my professors when I was a student, I followed the director’s advice and looked at online lessons.
Si-Yeol is an idol with a public image but also a private life full of emotions. How did you work to show both sides?
Kim Kang Min: When I studied my character, I didn’t face him thinking that there was something special behind him. Like anyone else, even Choi Si-Yeol must have different, external and internal sides, and this has made it even more human and close to me.
Being yourself an idol, interpreting a fan has given you new perspectives on how your fans feel?
Kevin: Yes, I clearly perceived their feelings. I have always known them, but this time I have been able to identify with even more in their purity, in the way they treat small moments as something precious and in the support they give to their bias with the hope of seeing it shine even more.
I interpret an idol, but in real life you are an actor. Was it funny to go down in that world?
Kim Kang Min: First of all, it was a very honorable experience. I was a spectator of concerts, but I had never trod the stage as Idol, so I was very happy to live this new experience: to be on stage, look directly into the camera, try to connect with the audience as a performer. In addition, this made me admire the artists Idol even more!
You have worked closely with Kim Kang Min on the set. What was your first impression and how did your chemistry develop?
Kevin: My first impression of Kang Min was that it was very high, like a model. Over time we started talking and getting to know each other better, and I believe that our chemistry came out of course even in acting.
Have you worked closely with Kevin of the Omega X. What was your first impression and how did your chemistry develop on the set?
Kim Kang Min: At the beginning of the drama, Si-Yeol approaches more actively to AE-Joon, while AE-Joon tends to reject that approach, creating a certain level of embarrassment between the two characters. So Kevin and I also approached quite slowly when we met the first time. With the passage of time and filming, as our characters became closer, we too have become closer in real life, and this has made it more natural to work together.
There are intense and emotional moments in the series. What was the most difficult scene to go around for you?
Kevin: There was a scene in which I walked in the corridor bringing heavy objects: that was the most difficult. The objects were really very heavy and I had to fall, throwing them into the air in a “beautiful” way, but I think I did not do it so well … it is something that still leaves me a little regret.
What was the most difficult scene to turn, emotionally or technically?
Kim Kang Min: There are scenes in which Si-Yeol cries. I had to focus a lot on the control of emotions, especially in those sequences.
Another member of Omega X, Junghoon, does it appear in the series as JJ how was it to share the screen with him?
Kevin: To tell the truth, I was happy to be in the same drama with him, but at the same time I didn’t want to meet him on the set. (laughs) All our members are like my family, and I felt a little embarrassed and shy to show myself as an actor, and not as idol, in front of him. In the end we never found ourselves on the set at the same time.
Does the drama also see the participation of Junghoon of the Omega X in the role of JJ how was the dynamic among you three?
Kim Kang Min: In this drama there are many characters, each with a unique and fascinating personality. In general, we all had a great chemistry, so working together was really fun. I have been happy throughout the filming period.
Your Omega X group is famous for powerful performances. Was it strange to go from the stage of a concert to the set of a drama?
Kevin: I didn’t feel strange or discomfort because I was already used to shooting video clips and content. Even if acting and performing have similarities, they still remain different areas, so I wanted to focus on what I could learn from the set as an actor.
Have you found some similarities between you and Si-Yeol?
Kim Kang Min: In the drama, Si-Yeol tends to hold back his feelings and make decisions on his own. I found that its silent nature was the most similar thing to me in real life.
Director Baek Min Hee has a particular style in the web drama. What did you learn by working with her?
Kevin: I felt really honored and grateful to be able to debut as an actor with the director Baek Min Hee. I had a lot to learn, since it was my first time to act, but she encouraged me a lot and left me long and full of useful advice. Thanks to her, I adapted very quickly to the set.
Working with the director Baek Min Hee, what was the most precious advice or feedback you received?
Kim Kang Min: Director Baek min Hee has always communicated with everyone for each scene, and was very open to the ideas of the actors, rather than giving unilateral advice. At the same time, he always shared his opinions, and this allowed us to proceed well. Thank you, Baek director, for always congratulating me!
The BL Drama are conquering international popularity. What do you hope that the global audience caught by My Bias is showing!?
Kevin: Looking at the series, there are many scenes and narratives with warm messages. If you are someone’s fans, I think you can really reflect yourself in those moments. I hope our drama can transmit comfort, empathy and warmth.
The BL Drama are increasingly receiving attention to global level. How do you feel part of this wave?
Kim Kang Min: It is an honor. It was my first time with this kind, and without the attention and support of the public I would not be the person I am today. I am only grateful, and I want to keep this attitude in my life.
If I could act in another genre – romantic comedy, action, thriller – which one would you choose?
Kevin: I would like to try any kind, if I have the opportunity, so as to be able to learn and build more experience.
If you could play a completely different role in your next project, what would it be?
Kim Kang Min: I don’t know if it can be defined completely different, but I would like to experience a role in which I can give comfort and warmth, because I myself have received comfort through this drama.
Filming was made in a school environment. Did you bring you back to memories of your student life?
Kevin: Absolutely yes! Walking through the set I thought about my school memories and how long had it already passed.
Since most of the story takes place at school, did you remind you of your high school years?
Kim Kang Min: Enter the school, see the blackboard, the corridors, the auditorium … he brought me back to the mind.
Would you like to act in Italy one day? What kind of project would you dream of doing here?
Kevin: Italy is certainly one of the countries I would like to visit. It would be a great honor to be able to recite here! I would really like to shoot a youth story with the scenario of Venice as a background.
Would you like to visit or turn to Italy? What is the first thing you would do here?
Kim Kang Min: I’d love to! I believe Italy is a truly beautiful country. The first thing I would do would be to admire the landscapes and enjoy a good cup of coffee.
In a word, how would you describe your role of Na Ae-Joon?
Kevin: I would say “cloud”. If a bias is the sky, AE-Joon would be happy to float there, with gratitude for its bias, but without going beyond that thin line that separates them.
In a word, how would you describe your role of Choi Si-Yeol?
Kim Kang Min: To summarize what I tried as Si-Yeol in this drama in one word, I would say “ordinary”. Si-Yeol may seem special and fascinating on stage or on the screen, but it is also just a common person who feels various emotions, just like all of us. 🙂
