The first degree trial for the murder of Sofia Stefani, the 33-year-old policewoman killed on 16 May 2024 in the local police offices of Anzola dell’Emilia. A dangerous relationship with a tragic epilogue
The story is an emotional tangle that sees passion, power and manipulation intertwined. Gualandi and Stefani had one extramarital relationshipalso confirmed by the mass of chat messages presented in the documents, which the defense wanted to describe as a deeper bond than a mere erotic relationship. According to the lawyers, terms such as “love” appear dozens of times in the messages between the two. The exchanges describe an adolescent-style relational typology with equal emotional-sentimental involvement.
However, according to the accusation, this relationship would soon become a terrain of manipulation and influence: the deputy prosecutor Lucia Russo he forcefully argued in the courtroom of “ferocious professional and sexual manipulation” by the accused Gualandi.
The fatal shot
Regarding the shot fired by Gualandi, the defense has always spoken of a tragic accident and not a voluntary homicide. According to the lawyers, the shot was fired by mistake during a scuffle between the two, while the former commander was cleaning the weapon. The Court, not having believed this version to be credible, instead accepted the approach of the Prosecutor’s Office.
Sentence and compensation
The decision for life imprisonment leads to a fixed point: for the judges, it was not a fatality, but a voluntary homicidewith a clear responsibility on Gualandi’s part.
The first instance verdict provides for huge compensation for the civil parties involved: 600,000 euros each for the victim’s parents, 500,000 for the boyfriend and 30,000 to the Municipality of Anzola.
Sofia’s family has obtained a form of justice, but the void left by her death remains profound.
Femicide?
Given the particularity of the case, many observers have deliberately spoken of feminicide. The testimony of Sofia’s mother made it clear how her daughter was a strong but also very vulnerable woman. In fact, the policewoman suffered from a borderline personality disorder and was undergoing treatment with psychotropic drugs. One might ask oneself how it is possible that such fragile subjects and with such a delicate psychological profile find themselves carrying out public order functions where the use of firearms is also required. Unfortunately, Sofia’s peculiar condition did nothing but aggravate the toxic spiral in which she found herself without being able to escape.
The Prosecutor’s Office also described Gualandi as a narcissist, manipulator and serial liar. An individual who, according to the accusation, not only wanted to have emotional control over the young woman, but also to exercise full power over her.
