Lucio Dalla: the pop opera inspired by his songs is born

From December in Italian theaters “The Year to Come”, a pop opera inspired by the musical imagination of the great singer-songwriter

Lucio Dalla’s songs become a pop opera. It will debut in December in Ferrara The year to comea new theatrical show created by Marcello Corvino and directed by Manuel Rengawhich will bring to the stage an original story built around the poetic and musical universe of the Bolognese singer-songwriter.

This is not a biography nor a traditional tribute concert. The show is inspired by the themes that run through some of Dalla’s most famous songs – dreams, anxieties, love, loneliness, the desire for change — to transform them into a choral narrative set during New Year’s Eve.

The story takes place in a hotel by the sea, where very different characters find themselves dealing with expectations, regrets and hopes. A young couple on the run, a singer looking for a lost love, a disillusioned musician and an entrepreneur in existential crisis meet under the gaze of a mysterious doorman. As midnight approaches, reality and imagination end up blurring, while Dalla’s songs become the soundtrack of their lives.

The dramaturgy is entrusted to Emanuele Aldrovandi. Pierdavide Carone will take the stageaccompanied by the Orchestra of the City of Ferrara and the Choir of the Teatro Comunale of Ferrara directed by Teresa Auletta.

The project represents a new reinterpretation of repertoire by Lucio Dallaan artist who continues to exert a strong influence on Italian music and culture. The goal is not to celebrate the myth, but to demonstrate how his songs are still able to tell the emotions and contradictions of the present today.

«We didn’t want to tell the life of Lucio Dalla, but to enter the world that his songs have built. The characters in the show are born precisely from those emotions, those fears and those desires that his music continues to tell today”, explains director Manuel Renga.
