“Nothing more powerful and prestigious has ever existed”

The first formal meeting of the Board of Peace, the international organization created by the American President to guide the post-war situation in Gaza, takes place at the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace

The first formal meeting of the Board of Peacethe international body desired and created by the American President Donald Trump.

From the room of Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace (so renamed at the end of December), the tycoon welcomed the beginning of “a great day”.

The objectives of the Board of Peace

The objective «is a simple word to say but difficult to produce: peace». «I don’t think there has ever been a Board more powerful and prestigious of this,” Trump continued, asserting that now is the time to “work together to secure the future of the people of Gaza, the Middle East and the world.”

«They are mostly leaders and highly respectable people, mainly from Middle Eastern countries», who have «also been very generous with funds, as has the United States. There is nothing more important than peace».

However, there was no shortage of comments on IranWhere Trump reiterated that “either we find an agreement or bad things will happen”, giving a timeline of 10 days to reach an agreement.

Five countries will contribute to the peacekeeping mission of International Stabilization Forceas Trump announced. It’s about of Indonesia, Kosovo, Albania, Kazakhstan and MoroccoWhile Egypt and the Jordan they will train 5000 Palestinian policemen.

It was then the secretary’s turn Marco Rubiowho wanted to clarify how the war in Gaza “could not be resolved through classical international institutions”, hence the need to create a specific body with the support of most of the countries in the region.

The delegates present

Today’s meeting was attended by more than 35 heads of state or representatives. including Javier Milei (Argentina), Prabowo Subianto (Indonesia), To Lam (Vietnam), Hun Manet (Cambodia) e Viktor Orbàn (Hungary). Also present was Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar for Israel (Foreign Minister), as well as delegates from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the Emirates, Qatar, Jordan, Bahrain and others.

Among the Europeans, Hungary, Bulgaria, Belarus and Albania have joined the Board. Italy, as well as Romania, Switzerland and Greece, is present as an observer, with the Italian delegation being led by the Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.

Also present at the meeting was the head of the Palestinian Technocratic Committee Ali Sha’atthe High Representative for Gaza Nickolay Mladenov and American special envoys Steve Witkoff And Jared Kushner (Trump’s son-in-law).

However, many have rejected the invitation, including France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany and Sweden, expressing fears that the Board could weaken the role of the UN. A concern only partially reassured by Trump’s words, which sees the Board “working alongside the United Nations” but “potentially become bigger than it.”

How the Board works

In the practice, the Board of Peace is structured as an international organization with Donald Trump as chairman without term limits, therefore a life position.

According to the statute, each member country serves for a three-year period but can obtain a permanent role by making substantial additional contributions, and membership and tenure depend on chairman.

The Board will convene meetings at least once a year or when the president deems appropriate, and will coordinate financing, reconstruction oversight and international forces, but beyond these activities based on voluntary commitments from member states and the institutions involved, it will not have, at least for the moment, coercive powers.
