On Ukraine Trump looks to the Middle East

Is a diplomatic turning point on the Ukrainian crisis? Wednesday, Donald Trump made it known to have had a “highly productive” phone call with Vladimir Putin. The American president made it known that he had agreed with the Russian counterpart that the negotiations begin “immediately”. Subsequently, Trump also had an interview with Volodymyr Zelensky, who hoped for “reliable and lasting peace”. The tenant of the White House then commissioned the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, the director of the CIA, John Ratcliffe, the national security councilor, Mike Waltz, and the American envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, to drive The American delegation for peace interviews. Instead, it does not seem that the US correspondent for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, will be part of the negotiating team, who – according to what was declared by the State Department – should still visit Kiev in the coming days. Finally, but not least, Trump also announced a future meeting with Putin, which should be hosted by Saudi Arabia.

The details of the plan are not yet clear which will be presented by the United States. However, some elements have already been disclosed. The chief of the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth, has excluded a future access of Ukraine to NATO and also defined unrealistic that Kiev re -supply the borders prior to 2014. As regards the security guarantees, Hegseth said they will not be lined up American soldiers in Ukrainian territory. Instead, he hoped for a direct commitment of “European and non -European troops”.

Witkoff’s involvement in UCRAIN negotiationsThe fact that Saudi Arabia will probably host the possible summit between Trump and Putin clearly suggest that the White House wants to intersect the dossier on Ukraine with the Middle Eastern one. The American president knows perfectly that Putin came out weakened by the fall of Bashar al Assad. And he therefore knows that the Tsar has an urgent need to recover influence in the Middle Eastern chessboard. This is a theme on which Trump could help the Russian president in exchange for some significant concession in negotiations on Ukraine. For this reason, further significant dossier stand out in the background: from the future of Gaza to the Iranian nuclear agreement.

Trump’s idea is therefore to try to solve the Ukrainian crisis, Going beyond the only triangulation between Washington, Kiev and Moscow. Without forgetting a decisive convinced of stone: that Turkey who, in 2022, mediated the agreement on wheat and which, last year, is in fact the winning out of the fall of Assad in Syria. It will therefore also be necessary to see what Ankara’s weight will be in the imminent diplomatic negotiations on the Ukrainian crisis. For the moment, the overall situation remains in Fieri. We will understand in the next few days how the negotiations will be outlined.
