While the general’s party continues to grow (and he, after the League, also wants to surpass Forza Italia), the nightmare of the great alliance among the ranks of the adversaries is making its way among the opposition. But it will be up to Giorgia Meloni to untie all the knots of the agreement
One point above, one point below: one of the topics that hold center stage in this torrid summer of Italian politics is the head-to-head, in the polls, between the League and Futuro Nazionale.
In recent days there have been two surveys, with (needless to say) two different outcomes: Tecnè for the Dire agency it reports the Carroccio at 6.4% and the party of Roberto Vannacci at 4.9%; For Ipsos Doxa for the Corriere della Sera, however, it is overtaking, with National future to 6% and the Alloy at 5.6%. Who is right? It doesn’t matter at all, for two reasons. The first: the trend is the same for everyone, Vannacci goes up and the League goes down. The second: the general already has the next target in his sights, that is Forza Italiareported just above 8%.
The reason? Simple: «Once we have overtaken Forza Italia in the polls», a big figure from Futuro Nazionale tells Verità, «we will make the center-right self-sufficient from a party that is completely in the hands of the strong powers in Brussels». And Vannacci? «Obviously I look at the polls», the general tells ANSA, «because I can’t help but look at them, but these are not the polls that I do every day, the ones I do every day are the ones among the people, on means of transport, on the subway, on the bus, on the train, where there are lots of people who come to tell me not to give up. I do like Winston Churchill», exaggerates Vannacci, «that when he had to decide whether to resist or make a separate peace with Germany, feeling the pulse of the people on the subway, he decided to hold on. We have one thing in common, we are two soldiers, because few people know it, but Churchill was indeed a professional soldier. He had attended the army academy.”
Overtaking in the polls and the ghost of Churchill
While “Bobby Winston” Vannacci enjoys the continued growth of his party, Matteo Salvini he shrugs: «I don’t get excited when the polls go well», comments the leader of the League, «I don’t get depressed when they go badly. My poll is on the day of the political elections, therefore autumn 2027. I observe Vannacci, Schlein, Conte and everyone with attention and respect but I have no worries whatsoever.”
The exponents of the centre-left are instead worried, and very much so, as they hope that Vannacci, by presenting himself to the political elections alone, will do what they are unable to do, that is, prevent the return of Giorgia Meloni at Palazzo Chigi: «If Meloni makes an agreement with Vannacci for the elections», he tells Omnibus on La7 Raffaella Paitagroup leader in the Senate of Italy aliveMatteo Renzi’s party, «will have a big conflict problem with Forza Italia and Lega and Vannacci will lose face. If, on the other hand, this agreement does not excite us, we will have a split center-right for the first time. The centre-left with a strong and authoritative center on the issues is competitive and has ample chances of winning. And to therefore prevent those who are in favor of remigration from choosing the next President of the Republic.”
The positioning of Futuro Nazionale and the clash on the Quirinale
The former MEP responds live to Paita Antonio Maria Rinaldione of the big names of Futuro Nazionale: «Are you», says the economist, «are you telling us that it is a prerogative of the left to elect the President of the Republic? Democracy works by contemplating an alternation. It would also be time for the right to elect a head of state”, adds Rinaldi, “who is equally valid Sergio Mattarella». The issue of the alliance between Vannacci and the center-right is still on the table and will be like this for the next few months. We distinguish two plans: the Forza Italia and Fdi troops have no problem allying themselves with Vannacci. In order to return to Parliament and remain in government, deputies and senators, undersecretaries and ministers would strike an agreement tomorrow morning. Exemplary is the reasoning, in pure Christian Democratic language (we know that for him it is a compliment), of the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi. When asked whether Vannacci is more of a resource or more of a danger for the centre-right, as reported by Askanews, Piantedosi responds as follows: «The answer will probably be given by Vannacci himself in this continuation of the legislature. Now a lot has been said about his political movement bursting onto the scene, then clearly we need to understand what the general wants to propose. Many of the things he already says are also said by the centre-right political parties.
Now, beyond the formulas that are very effective as political slogans, if remigration means repatriating illegal immigrants, we are making a huge effort, with a growing trend of over 20% per year. Understanding whether Vannacci will be within the perimeter of the centre-right or not will depend on what he intends to do: that is, whether his political proposals are made to compete with the centre-right parties or, vice versa, to make an integrative and additional contribution to the centre-right political parties. If it were to somehow present itself as an appropriate contribution to the integration of the centre-right political offer”, adds Piantedosi, “I believe that those responsible will be able to make the right assessments”.
Giorgia Meloni’s issues and the unknown of the Berlusconi family
The person in charge would obviously be Giorgia Meloni, who however not only has the problem of winning elections, but also of governing well and maintaining strong international relations. The reasoning, from this point of view, is more complex and takes into account various factors: what happens if Vannacci, once in government, pulls the strings on every measure? What do we do with Futuro Nazionale’s foreign policy positions? Marina and Piersilvio Berlusconi would they agree to combine the symbol of Forza Italia with that of Futuro Nazionale? Knots that will be up to “those in charge” to untie.
