Short track, silver relay Fontana in history: 14 medals

Arianna surpasses Mangiarotti, she is the most medalist ever

Arianna Fontana overtakes Edoardo Mangiarotti. With silver in the 3000 meter short track relay at the Milan Cortina Games, the Italian becomes the most medalist ever at the Olympics. With the fourteenth he took the record away from a legend of Italian sport, the fencer who between 1936 and 1960 was able to win 6 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze (8 medals in épée and 5 in foil) over 5 editions of the Games. In addition to those in the Games, Mangiarotti also won 26 medals at the world level, half of them gold. Arianna Fontana, for her part, won 3 gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze from Turin 2006 to Milan Cortina, passing through Vancouver 2010, Sochi 2014, Pyeongchang and Beijing 2022, i.e. six editions. The first podium, a bronze in the twenty-year edition, in the same race that gave her the record tonight, the 3000 meter relay. The Italians were in seventh heaven after the silver in the 3000 meter relay.

Fontana’s happiness

To the microphones of Rai Sport Arianna Fontana he comments immediately on his 14th Olympic medal: “Yes, it’s the fourteenth, but winning it like this is incredible. I’m sorry for the last change because I believed it, but I didn’t hear the Korean coming, damn it, from behind”, he smiles. “The season was long, with the injury I wasn’t able to give everything. We weren’t in the best position at the start, but we remained calm and brought home a silver which was a dream for everyone.” Great emotion also for Chiara Betti, at the Olympic debut: “As before the Olympics, I couldn’t hope for anything better. There were so many people cheering for us: when we took the lead it seemed like everything was falling apart. We tried until the end and we deserved this silver.” Along the same lines, Elisa Confortola: “It was truly exciting, the support was great. When we were in the lead everything exploded. It’s a silver that’s worth its weight in gold for how we arrived and for the race we did.” Closes Arianna Sighel: “It’s beautiful, we made a great relay.”
