Luciano Cannito gives us a beautiful version of the brilliant comedy made of iconic choreography and “spraying” special effects
In Hollywood at the end of the 1920s, during the transition from silent to spoken cinemasilent film star Don Lockwood with his friend Cosmo Brown are about to make their first sound film. Everything would go smoothly if not for one decidedly relevant detail. The terrible and ungainly voice of the protagonist Lina Lamont, a vain and arrogant diva. The talented Kathy Selden comes to their rescue, who will secretly lend her voice to Lina. This is the initial plot of one of the most famous brilliant comedies in the history of cinema, directed and starring a superb Gene Kelly.
“Singing in the Rain” is also one of the most beloved musicals of all time and is now on stage in a brilliant version signed by Luciano Cannito, who sees him in the role of director and choreographer. His Milanese debut is scheduled at the National Theater on Wednesday 25 February, and he will continue to “dance” in Brescia, Vicenza, Padua and Rome.
The protagonists are Lorenzo Grilli, Vittorio Schiavone (defined by Cannito as two monsters of acting and tap dancing), Flora Canto and Martina Stella who, in the role of Lina Lamont, takes on a comic role for the first time.
“The film is from 1952, and it has become a classic because it has wonderfully correct and blended ingredients. In this version, I tried to make it even funnier by underlining its comical part, enhancing its lightness. I think that more than ever today the meaning of theater is to unwind, giving a couple of hours of pure fun.” Luciano Cannito explains. “Not only maximum fun, but also maximum quality, and for this I have to thank Fabrizio from Fiore Entertainment. It is necessary to create productions based on excellence, accompanied by important investments, to ensure that great shows are not only seen in London’s West End or on Broadway.”
Between laughter, music, iconic choreography and romance, on stage there will be an exceptional protagonist. The rain. The real one.
“There will be real rain on stage, a setup that was unthinkable just ten years ago!” says the director.
“Singing in the rain – the musical” does not simply pay homage to a great classic: it gives the public all its intelligent irony and contagious joy of living. With all the necessary ingredients to be overwhelmed, laugh, dream and to be able, without a shadow of a doubt, to dance and sing in the rain!
