There is a moment when a scooter stops being simply a means of getting around the city and becomes a travel companion. It is exactly the terrain on which the new is inserted SYM Cruisym 400a medium-sized GT that aims to bring together two apparently distant needs: the practicality required for daily travel and the comfort necessary to also tackle trips out of town. A concrete formula, to which SYM adds particularly rich equipment and a competitive price.
The project was born around a 399 cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, capable of 34 HP at 6,750 rpm and 37 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpmcombined with the CVT automatic transmission. Numbers that tell of a scooter designed more for overall balance than for the pursuit of absolute performance. And it is precisely in real use that the Cruisym 400 shows its character: the accelerator response is prompt, the starts are brilliant and the thrust allows you to tackle traffic, overtaking and faster transfers with ease.
The cycling follows the same philosophy. The Cruisym adopts a 15-inch front wheel and a 14-inch rear wheel, a solution that contributes to stability without excessively penalizing agility. The steel frame and suspension are set to offer safety and comfort, while the braking system includes a 288 mm front disc and a 275 mm rear disc with ABS. There is also traction control, a further element that increases the level of safety in daily driving.
But it is by looking at the Cruisym 400 as a whole that SYM’s ambitions emerge. The riding position is relaxed, the saddle is placed at 785 mm from the ground and integrates a three-position adjustable lumbar support. The windshield contributes to aerodynamic protection, while the tank provides 14.5 litres underlines the vocation for transfers. The passenger also benefits from a wide saddle and a configuration designed to make traveling as a couple pleasant.
However, it is on the technology front that the Cruisym 400 tries to stand out the most. The instrumentation is entrusted to a 7 inch TFT displaywhich can be connected to your smartphone via the SYM+ app. Also on board are the keyless system, USB and USB-C sockets, tire pressure monitoring and full LED lighting. To complete the picture there are two integrated dashcams, one front and one rear, capable of recording images while driving: a solution that is still uncommon in the segment and which can be useful both for documenting a journey and for daily travel.
Technology, however, does not take over practicality. Indeed, it is one of the most successful aspects of the project. The underseat compartment is large enough to accommodate a full-face helmet and a jetwhile other compartments allow you to store the objects that normally accompany everyday travel. It is a fundamental feature for a GT scooter intended to be used not only in free time, but also for going to work, running errands and getting around on a daily basis.
The result is a scooter that doesn’t necessarily try to impress with extreme numbers, but which focuses on a concept that is perhaps more important for those who actually use a scooter: do many different things well. In the city it offers a comfortable driving position and a ready response; on the ring roads it implements stability and protection; at the weekend it can transform into a touring vehicle capable of tackling more demanding journeys without requiring particular sacrifices.
The price also contributes to making the proposal interesting. The Italian price list of SYM Cruisym 400 is set at 5,499 euros ex dealera figure that places it in a particularly competitive range considering its displacement, electronic equipment and GT setting.
Ultimately, the Cruisym 400 interprets the concept of the modern scooter in a very concrete way: not just an agile vehicle for the city, but a platform capable of accompanying the owner throughout the week and taking him out of town when the time comes to take a break. Comfort, technology, load capacity and a sufficiently lively engine they are the ingredients of a recipe that focuses above all on balance. And it is precisely this ability to not sacrifice one function to favor another that probably represents the most interesting feature of the new GT from SYM.
