From the United States to Hungary, passing through Brazil and Israel: here is where the seats will decide the future of politics
January 18: presidential elections in Portugal
The outgoing president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, was a member of the Social Democratic Party, a liberal-conservative coalition. Having taken office in 2016, he cannot, according to the constitutional provisions, run for a third consecutive term. Currently, the main contenders to succeed him are: Luís Marques Mendes (of the Social Democratic Party), António José Seguro (of the Socialist Party) and André Ventura (of Chega).
April 12: Parliamentary elections in Hungary
Voting will be held for the 199 seats of the National Assembly. According to the Constitution, the president appoints prime minister the leader of the party that achieves a majority: a majority that is currently held by Fidesz, the party of Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
May 31: presidential elections in Colombia
Elected in 2022, the outgoing president, Gustavo Petro, cannot run for a second term based on the provisions of the Constitution. It will be interesting to understand if, as happened in some of the recent elections held in Latin America, Colombia will also turn to the right. Let’s remember that Petro has bad relations with the Trump administration.
September 20: Parliamentary elections in Russia
The round must be held by this date and will see 450 seats in the State Duma up for grabs. The absolute majority is 226. Vladimir Putin’s party, United Russia, currently holds over 300. The previous elections took place in mid-September 2021.
September: Parliamentary elections in Morocco
This month we will vote to elect the 395 members of the House of Representatives. The majority is set at 198.
October 4: general elections in Brazil
In this round, both the president and the members of the national Congress will be elected. The outgoing president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has not completely ruled out his re-election. In the meantime, the son of the former head of state, Jair Bolsonaro, Flavio, took to the field. The elections in Brazil represent an interesting thermometer for understanding the political balance within Latin America and the Brics.
October 27: Parliamentary elections in Israel
This round will lead to the election of the 120 members of the Knesset. These are the first parliamentary elections that the Jewish state will hold since the massacre, perpetrated by Hamas, on 7 October 2023 (the last ones took place on 1 November 2022). The absolute majority is 61 seats.
November 3: Midterm elections in the United States
On the occasion of this electoral round, the entirety of the House of Representatives and one third of the Senate will be renewed. Donald Trump is banking on Republicans being able to maintain majorities in both houses of Congress. Otherwise, he knows full well that his parliamentary agenda could suffer a setback. The electoral campaign promises to be heated. And, in all likelihood, it will have at its center the delicate issue of combating inflation and the cost of living.
