the occupation of houses remains illegal

The European Parliament rejects Ilaria Salis’s amendments on the occupations of empty houses in the report on the EU housing crisis. Criticism and controversy from the center-right

The European Parliament met yesterday in plenary in Strasbourg and approved the report Francisco Borja Gimenez Larraz (EPP) on the housing crisis in the EU, with 367 votes in favour, 166 against and 84 abstentions. The amendments presented by were rejected Ilaria Salis and colleagues from the group The Left, who essentially proposed not to combat illegal occupations.

One in particular highlighted “the need to counter the criminalization of the occupation of vacant accommodation, particularly of public property and of owners with multiple residential estates, where such occupation is carried out by individuals who cannot afford accommodation at prevailing market prices”. A proposal that essentially asked for the legalization of illegal occupations in certain cases, among other things by not distinguishing those who own immense real estate assets from those who can count on two or three family homes.

«The amendments of Ilaria Salis and his colleagues”, he comments with The Truth the national president of Confconstruction, Giorgio Spaziani Testa«they essentially asked to suppress the right to property through the legitimization of a crime, the theft of houses, and the violation of contracts, with the prohibition of eviction for non-payment in some cases. Rejecting them was the least that could be done, as these were measures that I have no difficulty in defining as subversive. The problem is that results similar to those indicated in the amendments are achieved on a daily basis, at least in Italy, through de facto behaviors that are the result of widespread and die-hard mentalities.” The vice-president of the European Parliament and MEP of the Brothers of Italy is satisfied Antonella Sberna: «With the vote on the European Parliament report on the housing crisis», underlines the Sberna«we brought the house into a new perspective and put an end to the hegemony of the left on the topic. This is demonstrated by the vote against the final text by the Greens and the Left and the rejection of the amendments presented by the MEP Ilaria Salis and his colleagues, who support the expropriation of public and private timeshares and legitimize illegal occupations. Precisely those amendments represent an unacceptable distortion of the right to housing, especially for all those who work hard every day to pay rent or a mortgage instalment. Without considering that, where illegal occupations occur, neighborhoods become more unsafe.”

Expresses appreciation for the rejection of the amendments presented by the Salis also the League MEP Anna Cisint: «We voted no to yet another ideological proposal from the European left», argues the Cisint«which represents a real invasion of the EU’s field in national housing policies, which must instead remain in the hands of the States. And when it comes to homes, one of the brilliant proposals by could not be missing Ilaria Salis and of The Left: the legalization of house thieves, the possibility of occupying second homes for those who commit the “guilt” of leaving them vacant and even a European economic shield for those who do not pay the rent. A shameful idea typical of the left”, underlines the Cisint“advanced by she who has made the occupation of other people’s homes a political battle at the expense of citizens who respect the law.” «Private property cannot be touched and the evictions of illegally occupied houses cannot be questioned, with all due respect to my colleague Salis», reiterated her Northern League colleague Isabella Tovaglieri.
