Massimo Lovati, lawyer of Andrea Sempio, under accusation for the statements to Fabrizio Corona: the Prosecutor’s Office denies it, the Order investigates
One interview too many, words that came out of one’s mouth “through drinking” and a court case that has been a minefield for years. Massimo Lovati, defender of Andrea Sempio in the latest investigation into the murder of Chiara Poggi, has come under the spotlight for reasons that have nothing to do with trial strategies. In the sights, this time, there are no papers or investigations but statements made in front of the cameras by Fabrizio Corona, words that startled the Pavia Prosecutor’s Office and attracted the attention of the Milan Bar Association.
The disputed sentences
Lovati had implied that the reopening of the case was the result of the will of the deputy prosecutor Stefano Civardi. «Napoleon, from what I was told, wanted to request the dismissal. That other one instead, that Civardi”, the words came under scrutiny. A reconstruction defined as “without any foundation” by the prosecutor Fabio Napoleone, who pointed out that in 2023 Civardi was not even in Pavia but still on duty in Milan. In fact, only since February 2024 has the Garlasco file been co-assigned to Civardi.
Between denials and justifications
Overwhelmed by the controversy, Lovati attempted to defend herself, speaking of a media deception: “I was asked to do a serial, I was poured a drink and I was betrayed.” Words that did not extinguish the controversy, on the contrary. Already under investigation for aggravated defamation against the Giarda firm – the former defenders of Alberto Stasi – Lovati now risks seeing a new disciplinary front opened.
The dispute with the Giarda family
Last March, in front of the cameras, he spoke of a “machination of the Giarda defense”. Serious accusations that pushed Fabio and Enrico Giarda to file a complaint. Not only that: in recent weeks, new sentences on Father Angelo’s alleged membership of a “white Freemasonry” have fueled the possibility of further legal action.
The Order under pressure
The Milan District Disciplinary Council has already opened an investigation. On the table there are not only questions of opportunity but possible violations of the duty of fairness towards colleagues and the Prosecutor’s Office. For Lovati, who continues to defend Andrea Sempio in the investigation into the Garlasco crime, this is an unexpected and dangerous chapter. His own words, more than the trial documents, now risk marking his career.
