Rebel forces in Syria announced tonight that “the free Syrian people have overthrown the regime of Bashar Al-AssadPreviously, the rebels had arrived “beyond enemy lines”, in the Syrian capital Damascus, and had begun hunting down President Bashar Al-Assad. The rebels said they had freed prisoners from the military prison in Saydnayaon the outskirts of Syria. Two rebel force sources told Reuters there appeared to be no Syrian army deployment in the city and in fact officers and security officials had withdrawn from the Defense Ministry headquarters in Damascus. Meanwhile, two senior Syrian officials told theReuters that President Bashar al-Assad had left Damascus for an unknown destination. According to reports in Syria, Assad’s plane took off from the country shortly after the rebels took control of the capital, but the plane then disappeared from radar and at this point it is unclear where Assad and his family are . The news that circulated last night according to which the presidential plane had crashed shortly after take-off has been denied, however, no one is able to say where Bashar al-Assad is.
The desperate attempt to contact Donald Trump to stay in power
According to Bloomberg, before leaving Syria the Syrian president through the United Arab Emirates sent an indirect message to the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trumpproposing that he could remain in power with American backing in exchange for severing ties with Iran and Russia. A desperate move that was unsuccessful given that the president-elect present on Saturday at the reopening ceremony of Notre-Dame in Paris was clear: «Syria is a disaster, but it is not our friend, and the United States should have nothing to do with this. This is not our fight. Let’s let the situation develop. Let’s not get involved.” U.S. priorities in Syria are currently focused on preventing the internal conflict from fostering a resurgence of the Islamic State or causing a major humanitarian crisis. Jake SullivanWhite House national security advisor, highlighted that “these issues represent a significant concern.” Sullivan said the main goal is to prevent a return of theIsis, stressing that the United States will act both directly and collaboratively Syrian Democratic Forces and the Kurds to ensure that such a scenario does not occur. And what happens now? The Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Razi Al-Jalali issued a special statement after the overthrow of the Assad regime, in which he said that his government is ready to cooperate with any leadership chosen by the Syrian people. «I hope everyone acts rationally. I am ready to support the continued management of the country’s affairs. We stand ready to work with whatever leadership the people choose. We extend a helping hand to every Syrian citizen who wishes to preserve the country’s capabilities and believes that Syria belongs to all Syrians,” Al-Jalali said.
A new Caliphate and this time on the Mediterranean
Previously, the commander of the Syrian jihadist rebel organization “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham”, Abu Mohammad al-Julani, announced that his forces had “completely liberated” the city of Homs, Syria’s third largest city, from Assad regime. He called on his fighters not to harm the Syrian army soldiers who were laying down their weapons. Then, after the entry of the armed faction into the capital, al-Jolani added: “No one will be able to approach the public institutions of Damascus, which will remain temporarily under the supervision of the outgoing prime minister, until the official handover takes place.” So the leader of HTS took Syria thanks to Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who had long wanted the fall of Bashar al-Assad and now the fear is that a new Caliphate will be born and this time on the Mediterranean. Everyone, including Israel, feared that Syria would fall under the control of Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, the leader of the Sunni coalition that overthrew the regime in just eleven days. Al-Jolani, a long-time jihadist, learned from the mistakes of Osama Bin Laden and his mentor Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, founders respectively of Al Qaeda and ISIS which then passed into the hands of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi to whom he did not submitted and with whom there was the rupture that led to the creation of Jabhat al-Nuṣra (Front for the Relief of the People of Syria) which then merged into Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (Organization for the Liberation of the Levant). Abu Mohammed al-Jolani avoids causing terror: he presents himself as a moderate and promises to govern the country in an inclusive way, guaranteeing representation to all ethnic groups and religions. But it is only a comedy because al-Jolani is none other than a hard and pure jihadist and for Italy all this is a real disaster because it is easy to imagine that the Mediterranean will be literally stormed by thousands of desperate people.
