Interviewed by the director Maurizio Belpietro, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani spoke of Ukraine, Gaza, duties and relations with the United States on the stage of Il Day of Truth
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani intervened on stage de The day of truthin an interview conducted by the director Maurizio Belpietro, to face the main dossiers of Italian foreign policy. A close comparison, between pragmatism and strategic vision, in which Tajani touched the warm themes of the international scenario.
Starting with the war in Ukraine, the minister expressed skepticism on the possibility of a short -term respite: «In Ukraine I don’t see a short -scenario of peace shortly – said Tajani -. Putin is not in a position to stop: the Russian industry is now completely converted to war production, has announced an increase in the number of military. Going back would take time, even for internal reasons ».
Despite the diplomatic efforts by international actors such as the United States, Türkiye and the Vatican, Tajani has maintained a prudent attitude: “They are initiatives that we support, but I don’t think there will be a ceased before the end of the year”.
On economic sanctions, the minister expressed a pragmatic position: “I’m not a fan of sanctions on principle – he clarified -. They must serve to prevent Putin from financing the army. If they have this purpose, then they can be useful. But let’s not forget that Ukraine is the attacked country: Kiev will also have to sit at the table, but without overturning the responsibilities “.
Tajani then reiterated that any any military peace mission must take place exclusively under the aegis of the United Nations and with the agreement of all the parties involved: «Only in this way can we talk about a buffer area. Italy has always provided weapons only for the defense within the Ukrainian territory, never for offensive operations across the border “.
Moving on to the conflict in the Middle East, the minister firmly condemned the work of Hamas, while manifesting concern about the aggravation of the situation in Gaza: «I think Israel has now won on a military level. The liberation of the hostages is priority. I was among the first to defend the right of Israel to react, but a proportionate response was needed. Unfortunately it was not so. And yet – he added – Hamas is the main responsible for what is happening, because he hides behind civilians and feeds the hunting for the Jew “.
Finally, Tajani has dealt with the theme of duties and commercial relations with Washington, showing more optimistic: «I am more optimistic on this. The duties all damage, both those who impose them and those who suffer them. I believe that by 9 July an agreement between the EU and the USA can be closed. The Americans have a reason: they contest a strong commercial deficit to them against them. We have to export more, but also invest in the United States. The internationalization of our companies will be the best shield to defend Made in Italy ».
