Trump Attack: The Security System’s Flaws

The attack on Donald Trump in Pennsylvania, like any other attack on politicians or protected personalities, has within it errors and gaps in the security system.

In a press conference, Kevin Rojek, the FBI special agent in charge of the Pittsburgh office, said “it is surprising that the gunman was able to fire multiple shots at the rally for former President Donald Trump,” then added: “We are still working through the security apparatus that the Secret Service has put in place to find out what may have happened. There will be a long investigation into exactly what happened and how the individual gained access to the venue, what type of weapon he had. All of this will take days, weeks and months of investigation.” At the time of writing, Lieutenant Colonel George Bivens of the Pennsylvania State Police spoke about the shooter: “We have tentatively identified a shooter, but we are not stopping there. We are reviewing a lot of information. It will take some time before we can definitively answer all the questions,” such as whether it was a lone wolf who at a certain point fired multiple shots in the direction of the stage. The shooter was called Thomas Matthew Crooksa twenty-year-old from Pennsylvania known for his radical far-right views but despite being registered he was exactly where he shouldn’t have been and also armed. Why?

The analysis of the videos shows that something went wrong in the security service that was supposed to protect the Republican candidate and most likely, the short circuit occurred between the local police and the men who take care of Trump’s security.

Former President Donald Trump’s Secret Service protection has recently been beefed up, sources familiar with the matter told CNN. Trump first received Secret Service protection in November 2015 and expressed relief at the time. The shooter, who was stationed on a building 400-500 feet from the rally stage, did not appear to be a particularly skilled sniper, as he failed to hit a nearly stationary target in open terrain, ruling out the possibility of the attacker being a former U.S. military member. The gunman fired several shots from an “elevated position” outside the rally, according to the Secret Service, killing one rallygoer and seriously wounding two others in the shooting. Given that dealing with the security of a rally in the United States where weapons and explosives of all kinds are in circulation is extremely difficult, according to some witnesses the attacker was seen climbing onto the roof of the building and in particular one witness told BBC News that he had seen the suspect on the roof with a rifle and that he had tried to warn the police before the incident. Given that all testimonies must be assessed because on these occasions the risk of being deceived by braggarts seeking visibility is very high, it is not clear why the shooter had so much time to act. Perhaps he was mistaken for a secret service sniper? Possibly.

Secret Service Sniper Shoots, Kills Trump Attacker

Secret Service Sniper Shoots, Kills Trump Attackerwww.panorama.it

Here are the dramatic images of the attack against former US President Donald Trump, during an electoral rally in Pennsylvania. After the shot, however, a secret service sniper can be seen stationed on the roof behind the Republican candidate and shooting back. The shot will kill the attacker…

Another striking aspect is that Donald Trump, a divisive and polarizing character, spoke in public without the protection of a bulletproof lectern and the fact that he was not killed is pure luck given that the sniper aimed at his head. There were many mistakes by those who should have prevented all this from happening and we can only hope that light will be shed on the facts soon. It is clear that many things went wrong in Butler, Pennsylvania but the attempted assassination of Donald Trump is nothing but a new dark chapter in the tormented history of American political violence that is shaking up an already deeply divided nation in one of the most difficult periods in its modern history. Attacking a former president during an election rally, just days after accepting the Republican nomination, is an assault on democracy and the right of every American to choose their own leaders.
