In Cuba, the Castro regime has reportedly purchased 300 drones and is considering attacking the Americans
Tensions continue to rise between Washington and Havana. According to intelligence information obtained by Axiosthe Castro regime has reportedly purchased 300 military drones and is considering attacking the US base at Guantanamo Bay, American naval ships and probably Key West (which is located in Florida). In particular, according to what US officials reported, this war material would have been bought by Russia and Iran starting from 2023. The newspaper reported that this information could be used by Washington to justify a possible attack against Cuba.
Not only that. Always Axios reported that on Wednesday, the US Department of Justice plans to release an indictment against Raul Castro “for allegedly ordering the 1996 shooting down of two planes belonging to a Miami-based humanitarian organization called Brothers to the Rescue.” Furthermore, Washington is reportedly considering imposing further sanctions on Havana in the coming days.
In short, US pressure on Cuba is increasing. On Thursday, the director of the CIA, John Ratcliffe, went to the island to meet some senior Castro officials and convince them to come to terms with the United States. The White House has offered humanitarian aid and support for Cuban infrastructure, as long as the regime eases its repressive activities, frees political prisoners and moves geopolitically closer to the US. However, at least so far, Havana has not made progress in the direction desired by Washington. Which significantly increased the irritation of Donald Trump who, on several occasions, raised the possibility of resorting to the military option. All this, while, as highlighted by TheHillthe island is currently facing a serious energy crisis.
For Trump, the issue is geopolitical. Since returning to the White House last year, the American president has focused on the updated re-edition of the Monroe Doctrine with the clear intent of ousting the Chinese from the Western Hemisphere. Now, it is no mystery that historically the Castro regime represents one of the main points of reference for Beijing, as well as Tehran and Moscow, in Latin America. After the capture of Nicolas Maduro in January, Trump therefore wants to push Havana to enter Washington’s geopolitical orbit. It is in this sense that he has increased pressure on the island and is considering a military intervention. A scenario, the war one, which sees the Democratic parliamentarians against it, while it has split the Republican ones. While some of them are indeed in favor of the use of force, others have expressed skepticism. We will see in the next few days whether the White House will opt for the war solution or whether it will continue to try the path of negotiation.
