We do not invoke justice for those who flee the law

Sentenced in Milan Fares Bouzidi for resistance to public officials: he had been at the center of controversy after a chase in which a boy died. But justice has no doubts: no fault to the carabinieri. Meanwhile, silence falls on the death of the legrottaglie brigadier

Last week a judge of the Milan court sentenced Fares Bouzidi to 2 years and 8 months in prison for resistance to public officials. The newspapers gave the news in a few lines, in the local news pages. Curious: for months the young Tunisian was at the center of debates and comments, on TV and in the press. Bouzidi the night between 23 and 24 November last year was driving a scooter who did not stop at the ALT of a carabinieri patrol. Thus, through the streets of the Lombard capital, a tight pursuit began, which involved several cars from the weapon. After eight kilometers, the scooter crashed into the pole of a traffic light and a 19 -year -old Egyptian boy, Ramy Elgaml, who sat on the back of the saddle, died.

The dynamics of the accident was clear from the beginning: perhaps having something to hide, the two young people fled, hiring a dangerous Gincana with the carabinieri gazelles. Although there were no doubts about Bouzidi’s responsibility not to have stopped at ALT and that they endangered the life of the young man who traveled with him, commentators and politicians launched against the carabinieri, guilty of having made their duty, or of chasing the suspicions. A parliamentarian of the Democratic Party even managed to define the military assassins who hunted the two fugitives, and a former police chief, perhaps looking for visibility or other, started to give lessons on how the chase should be made, suggesting that the carabinieri could have taken the number of plates. For weeks, the hypothesis that the gazelle of the police had rammed the scooter was credited, causing Ramy’s death. And in the city, in the popular neighborhood where the young Egyptian lived, social centers and immigrants gave rise to road blocks, setting fire to the bins and waste.

Then came the appraisal arranged by the prosecutor, with whom it was clarified that the carabinieri car did not deliberately cause the accident. Therefore, no intention to drop Bouzidi and Elgaml fall. Simply, facing the high -speed curve, the driver lost control of the vehicle going to hit the car and then crashing into the pole. End, therefore, of all the parties of the party. Of all the accusations against the assassins in uniform. The sentence came with the formula of the abbreviated rite: 2 years and 8 months, with the confiscation of the gold necklanine and the 850 euros that were found on Bouzidi and that the investigators hypothesized were the result of some crime and the reason why the two non -EU citizens, instead of stopping at the ALT, fled.

The judge, in addition to condemning the young Tunisian to a prison sentence, also ordered compensation of 2 thousand euros in favor of the six carabinieri who participated in pursuit. According to the magistrate, as a consequence of Bouzidi’s statements, the military suffered moral damage, because they have accused of having caused the accident. The accused’s lawyers announced that they will appeal, considering the sentence imposed on their client too high, but regardless of this, the same lawyers said that Fares realized that he had hired that night “incorrect conduct”.

The trial in which the young Tunisian was condemned, however, is not closed, because he did not examine the consequences of the dangerous escape that led to Ramy’s death. If with your behavior someone, even if you don’t want to want to, cause the death of a person, risks the accusation of manslaughter. Running a hundred per hour in the streets of the center, making Gincana among the cars, perhaps it is not a pre -intentional murder, but it is difficult not to consider that the accident in which the young Elgaml died does not have a culprit, whose responsibilities go beyond resistance to public officials. It will then be a judge to establish the degree of guilt, but the first to have Ramy’s death on consciousness is bouzidi, certainly not the carabinieri who chased him. Who if anything have risked their lives. As he risked, losing it, the brigadier Carlo Legrottaglie, who in the Brindisi, a few days after his pension, chased a robber and was murdered by these. Too bad that newspapers and TVs have given more space to Ramy’s death, with relative accusations to the carabinieri of having caused it, than at the end of a servant of the state. Hours and hours of discussion in the talk shows and on the front pages for two young people fleeing the police, nothing or almost for the murdered carabiniere. For Ramy, justice is still asked, but who will ask for Carlo Legrottaglie? It is for him that justice must be invoked, not for those who flee from justice. And while we are there, politicians and journalists should also apologize. Not to the poor non -commissioned officer who died a month after the completion of his sixtieth birthday, but to all those servants of the state who, in addition to making their duty, risking the skin must also feel called killers.
