Without internet abroad? For 9 out of 10 Italians it is a question of safety

From maps to location sharing, the mobile connection becomes a security tool

Not just reservations, social networks or directions. When traveling abroad, having access to the internet has also become a matter of personal safety. According to the Safe when travel research, carried out by Airalo in collaboration with YouGov in nine countries, 91% of Italians consider it essential to have a mobile data connection during a trip. And being without the internet just when you need it generates a level of anxiety equal to 6.69 points out of 10, which rises to 7.1 among women.

The Italian figure is among the highest of the markets analyzed, confirming how technology is now an integral part of the travel experience. It’s not just a perception: 29% of those interviewed say they actually needed the internet for reasons related to their security.

The fear of walking alone at night

The situation that most affects Italians’ sense of security is walking alone at night, indicated by 51% of those interviewed. A percentage that reaches 62% among women and 61% among LGBTQIA+ people. This is followed by the exploration of neighborhoods that are little known or far from traditional tourist itineraries (33%) and difficulties in communicating with the local population (29%).

Furthermore, for 22% of LGBTQIA+ people, sexuality represents a factor that negatively influences the perception of their own safety, compared to 2% of the general population.

Maps, translators and geolocation: security comes from the smartphone

Among those traveling alone, 58% use maps and travel applications as a precaution, while 42% use translation apps. 28% share their location with someone left at home and 25% check in advance the security level of the areas they intend to visit.

Yet, Italy itself records the lowest levels of knowledge and use of applications dedicated to security: only 46% of those interviewed declare that they know them and just 26% that they have used them.

Connection also becomes an instrument of freedom. 85% of Italians believe that being able to rely on the internet allows them to explore less touristy destinations, while 56% say that a reliable connection would increase the likelihood of visiting places that they would otherwise have avoided for safety reasons.

«Having a reliable connection allows you to have access to essential tools to orient yourself, communicate or manage any dangerous situations», underlines Matteo Papa, Regional Director Europe of Airalo.

However, a paradox emerges from the research: Italians routinely use technology once they arrive at their destination, but still pay little attention to prevention, often neglecting simple measures such as saving emergency numbers, consular contacts and useful information in advance. Because your smartphone can represent an important support network, but being connected is only the first step to traveling safely.
