Zverev triumphs at Roland Garros Cobolli surrenders in the fifth set

The Roman fights like a lion but at the decisive moment he no longer has the strength to counter the German who wins for the first time in Paris

There is Sascha Zverev after the two phenomena Sinner and Alcaraz e the Roland Garros final won by the German over our Flavio Cobolli 6-1 4-6 6-4 6-7(5) 6-1 in 3 hours and 52 minutes gives him back that role of champion that previous defeats in the Slam finals had put into doubt. After all, you don’t become number three in the world by chance. Zverev played better overall even though Falvio Cobolli did his best to win a trophy that Italy has lacked since 1976. The Italian, after playing a splendid tie-break to take Zverev to the fifth set, collapsed in the decisive moment. Adriano Panatta hoped until the end to be able to hand over the French International Cup to a Roman who had won fifty years ago on the red clay of Paris and instead it was Zverev who triumphed.

The match

The final against Cobolli was anything but simple. The German started very strongdominating the first set and showing all his experience in big matches. The blue, however, did not give up and reacted courageously, bringing the match back into balance and forcing Zverev into a long mental and technical battle. In decisive moments, the greater experience of the German number one emerged. Powerful serve, solidity from the baseline and almost impeccable management of the important points allowed Zverev to resist the Italian’s extraordinary resistance and end the match by winning the most important trophy of his career. For German tennis this is a historic success. The last champion capable of leaving such an important mark on world tennis was Boris Becker. Zverev, often criticized for failing to transform his enormous talent into Slam titles, responded in the best way: by lifting the Musketeers Cup over Philippe-Chatrier.
