Palestine recognition, the move of UK, Canada and Australia: this is really what it means

United kingdom, Canada and Australia recognized the Palestinian state, irritating the United States and Israel

The Middle Eastern question continues to keep the bench. Sunday, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia have formally recognized the Palestinian state. Shortly thereafter, Portugal did the same. It is expected that, in the next few hours, France and Belgium also join this group. It is the first time that the countries belonging to the G7 carried out such a move: a move that, while arousing the appreciation of Saudi Arabia and Qatar, triggered the piccata reaction of Washington. “Our goal remains a serious diplomacy, not theatrical gestures. Our priorities are clear: the release of the hostages, the security of Israel and peace and prosperity for the entire region, possible only without Hamas,” said the American State Department.

“Israel categorically rejects the unilateral declaration of recognition of a Palestinian state made by the United Kingdom and some other countries. This declaration does not promote peace, but on the contrary further destabilizes the Region and compromises the possibilities of reaching a peaceful solution in the future”, said the Foreign Ministry of Jerusalem. Meanwhile, second Channel 12Benjamin Netanyahu, a few hours ago, would have convened an emergency meeting, avoiding inviting the Minister of Finance, Bezalel Smotrich, and that of national security, Itamar Ben-Gvir: the exponents more to the right of the government coalition.

The decision to recognize the Palestinian state by some western countries has determined cracks not only within the old continent but also, as we have seen, in transatlantic relationships. Secondly, as pointed out by SkyNewsthe United Kingdom now defines “Palestine” both the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The problem is that, notoriously, these two territories are subjected to different political entities: the first is under the ANP, the latter is under Hamas. A circumstance, this, which makes the recognition of a Palestinian state is politically problematic.

The same British vice -premier, David Lammy, said that London’s move will have a limited impact and that it should be used to bring to the future to the concretization of a two -states solution. Germany was shown to be the opposite, according to which the two -states solution should be negotiated before between the parties and only afterwards should a Palestinian state be recognized. Washington, for its part, has, in the recent past, argued that the hasty recognition of a state of Palestine would not be, if not an award to Hamas. And in the end the question remains one: is the recognition made yesterday by the western countries is the result of a concrete strategy or is it a purely symbolic move and the purposes of internal politics?
