Professional electronic waste, the hidden resource that we still exploit too little in Italy

Erion Professional’s Exceed program avoided over 6,000 tons of CO₂ and saved 10 million kWh in 2025. But Italy is still far from the European targets

Over 6,000 tonnes of CO₂ avoided. More than 10 million kilowatt hours saved, the equivalent of the annual domestic consumption of 3,700 families. They are the numbers of Exceed program, presented on March 31, 2026 at the Excelsior Hotel Gallia in Milan by Erion Professionalthe consortium dedicated to the management of waste electrical and electronic equipment of professional origin, the so-called Professional WEEE. During the event the following spoke: Walter RebosioGeneral Manager of Erion Professional; Danilo BonatoDirector of Strategic Development and Institutional Relations at Erion; Simonetta Cota And Francesca Rampinellifrom the Erion SDI Team; Raffaele LupoliDirector of EconomiaCircolare.com; Enzo FerloniProduct Regulatory and Compliance Manager Mitsubishi Electric Europe BV; Marcello AcquavivaPresident of Assoit; Eva MaschiettoLawyer and founder of EMLEX; Roberto NoceraPresident of Ucimac.

The study «Exceed Program: strategies and efficiency available to Producers and Networks» analyzes the results obtained in 2025 and the still unexpressed potential of a sector that concerns industrial printers, air conditioners, heat pumps, chillers: everything that companies, offices and institutions dispose of every year.

What are Professional WEEE and why do they matter

Professional WEEE are i electronic waste generated not by families, but by the productive and institutional world. A category that is often less visible than old domestic televisions or smartphones, but far from marginal: in fact they represent around 31 percent of all WEEE intercepted by official systems in Italy.

The problem is that their management is still fragmented. Without a structured system, this waste risks ending up in non-compliant channelswith negative repercussions in terms of the environment and traceability. Exceed was created precisely to respond to this gap: a standardized model that involves producers, installers and retailers along the entire supply chain.

In 2025, thanks to this approach, approximately 2,585 tons of WEEE Printing, such as large office printers, and over 455 tons of WEEE Clima, including air conditioners, heat pumps and chillers, were correctly recycled.

The gap with Europe: Italy collects only 30 percent

The results of the Exceed program are encouraging, but the study does not hide the structural criticalities of the Italian system. Italy today intercepts approximately 500,000 tons of WEEE through official channels, equal to only 30 percent of what is placed on the market. The objective set by European legislation is 65 percent: a gap that is difficult to ignore.

If the community targets were reached in the Climate and Printing sectors alone, the emissions avoided could rise to over 112,000 tonnes of CO₂, with energy savings of more than 70 million kWh. Numbers that make it clear how much room for improvement still exists.

“The valorisation of these flows allows us to recycle important raw materials,” he declared Walter Rebosio«contributing to greater efficiency and competitiveness of the production system. It is through a shared commitment between producers, distribution and users that environmental responsibility can become a factor for growth.”

A guide to orient yourself

On the sidelines of the event, «WEEE in the company: waste that becomes value» was also presented, an operational guide created by EconomiaCircolare.com in collaboration with Erion Professional, available free of charge online. A tool designed to help businesses navigate a complex regulatory framework.

The message that emerges from the Milanese day is twofold. On the one hand, the data shows that an organized system works and produces measurable results. On the other hand, the distance from European targets reminds us that the journey is still long. And that, in the meantime, every ton of electronic waste not managed correctly unfortunately represents a lost resource.
